John, I have a mark DL and it works fine, very steady picture on both formats and no shutter problems of the type you seem to have. The most usual problems on these are the rubber drive disks wearing so the projector runs slow, and the claw tip is easily broken off if you remove the rear gate without the red dot on the inching knob being uppermost. The lamps are not that easy to find either, known as A1/45 in the UK. The big feature of this machine when introduced was very good light output, hence DL=Dual lumens. Also, make certain you are using the correct gate, light grey=super8,dark grey=standard 8. I know this may seem obvious, but without the instruction book its an easy mistake to make.
