DERANN OPEN DAY JANUARY 2011 We set off very early Sunday morning making sure we got to Derann Films in time for when doors were due to open for the January 2011 Open Day. These events have been going for many years and are always an extremely friendly get-together of Derann staff and customers where special offers are available, fully running cinema and you can also hear the latest news from Derann.
Prior to the store doors opening a group gathered on the car park where we chatted away about our beloved hobby of home cinema and cine film collecting for 30 minutes or so. Its always nice to enthuse about Cine and we were not short of willing volunteers to tell us about the latest film they had found or what developments had taken place in the home Cinema the operate. By this time a healthy que was forming at Derann HQ so we all wandered up to join it. As the doors opened there was a rush down to the 8mm department and enthusiasm accompanied it. On offer were a number of special offers including Disney cartoons new and boxed for a mere 50p, plenty of 16mm and if you were looking for a projector they also cleared many in need of attention from only £10! I just about managed to purchase a 16mm machine which only needed a fuse fitting so was more than happy. They had a large selection of Super 8 used films available which by mid day had dwindled to but a few reels of film left as demand was extremely high for short subjects.
After one of Adrian’s extra special coffee cups an announcement was made that the first film show was about to start so many made way up to the Cinema where Bob and the Elmo Xenon was all set up and ready to roll. The Cinema was nearly full to capacity with just a few spare seats and some chose to stand at the back to watch the films Bob had prepared for us. The first programme was a mixture of special shorts, cartoons and general light entertainment material which at the end of the reel received a rousing round of applause. On the way out we visited Bob in the projection room as he was rewinding and congratulated him of a top job and excellent film programme. Another would follow after lunch.
Back down stars the bring and buy was in full swing with lamps, DVD’s etc so plenty to choose from ably manned by Ged who did a sterling job. It was a treat to look through the latest and older Super 8 stock as well which was plentiful and I made my purchase there. Before long our time with Derann was drawing to a close and we must thank Derann for a continued commitment to 8mm supplying our need for films, equipment and accessories which are available.
As we walked through the store we joined in a group of film collectors chat and we all agreed it was a very good and busy open day and we were looking forward to the next one later this year. Derann also confirmed plans are in full swing for the Northern Film Collectors Convention in November 2011 so as ever Derann staff is hard at it keeping the 8mm film flag flying.
Well done all the Derann staff for a super day out!

Thanks for a great report - it's a nice change to read something so upbeat! When I read that the cinema was almost full, I had to check the date to make sure I hadn't somehow found a report from 'the old days'!
I must try and get along to the one in summer - if there's anyone driving that could go near south London on way, who would welcome a passenger and a contribution to petrol costs, please let me know.
