I must add that if anyone has previously failed to go because of the expense involved, Derann have negotiated an amazing deal with the completely refurbished Savoy hotel that has to be see to be believed. E.g. 3 nights is only £82.50, and that even includes dinner, except on the Saturday - for which you need to book separately. I appreciate that some southern collectors think it's a long journey, but this event combines the pleasure of a relaxed friendly convention with a holiday. I've just managed to book the return train journey from London for £33.00, which isn't bad.

I've said this before, but if you've never been, I BEG you to go. Your only regret will be that you didn't start going earlier. Keith Wilton said in a recent FFTC that all convention attendances have dropped, but the fact is that Blackpool attendances have risen in the last 2 years!

Thanks for the plug guys.

We now have the following guests coming:
Dave Prowse, Shane Rimmer and Norman Wanstall.

All 3 will be there at the Saturday night dinner, as well as the exhibition day on the Sunday.

I am also trying to work on a question and answer session between the customers and the 3 guests on the Sunday afternoon - time permitting. (This may be your one and only opportunity to quiz this famous trio).

Along with a dvd show, film shows, memorabilia, film equipment, 8mm and 16mm stalls and the famous auction it really is going to be a fantastic weekend.

I look forward to seeing you all there

Adrian

Just returned from Blackpool today and popped into THE WHO (a Sci-Fi shop) when there today. Within minutes of entering I was reading the superb A3 poster advertising the Northern Film Collectors event in November and a very nice young lady asked me if I was interested in Star Wars? Yes said I. Make sure you come to this event in November as Dave Prowse is coming…My word, The shop are doing a great job for Derann and that A3 poster was quite superb and expertly designed to capture the feel of what’s going to be a fantastic film event.

How glad am I that my dear lady wife is letting me play out for three full days at the Savoy and attend this event and go to the Gala Dinner!

Yippee.

All sounds like great fun, wish I was going. [Frown]
I always associate Blackpool with an old movie I remember which starred Sir Richard Attenborough. I think it was called 'Brighton Rock ' and I remember a chase scene up the Blackpool tower and Dicky plunging to his death with a chilling scream! I only saw this movie once, but would love to see it again.

Paul are you sure Brighton Rock wasn't filmed in Brighton? I might be wrong but I always assumed it was.

Hmmm... have to do some research...

Anyway, I'd like to get up to the Blackpool bash, I've heard so much good stuff about it I don't need any further convincing, just need to make it happen.

Edit: Just found this on the Brighton and Hove City website

quote:
Brighton & Hove is rapidly becoming Britain's favourite film location and advertisers dream. Think 'Genevieve' (1953), Graham Greenes - 'Brighton Rock' (1947), Quadrophenia (1979), and more recently Ralph Fiennes in a passionate clinch with Julianne Moore in 'The End of the Affair'. Barbara Streisand filmed some scenes from 'On A Clear Day You Can See Forever' in the grounds of the Royal Pavilion.

Hi Mike,
Yes it looks like 'Brighton Rock' was filmed in Brighton, but (correct me if I am wrong) Brighton does not have an 'Eiffel Tower'. That plunge from the Tower ( if I am thinking of the correct film) must have been filmed in Blackpool.

"I'd like to get up to the Blackpool bash, I've heard so much good stuff about it I don't need any further convincing, just need to make it happen."

Mike - you were going all round the world recently so you MUST be able to make the journey from West Sussex to Blackpool! PLEASE save us regulars the distress of seeing you miss out!

Blackpool, whilst not losing any of its appeal for film-collectors, is clearly evolving into an event that can confound the 'doom and gloom' brigade and also attract the sort of people that attend festivals and film memorabilia events. Some of these might even become film collectors and bring new blood to the hobby.

I know how easy it can be to think "I must go one day" and miss another year, but don't forget that once you've experienced it, the thought of missing one is unbearable!

And finally, don't forget that even non-collecting wives, kids and friends can have a great time, both at the Convention and at other Blackpool attractions like the Pleasure Beach, Tower, etc - which don't have the crowds that are there in summer.

Adrian W. I 100% agree with all you thoughts above and in particular expanding the Blackpool event into stars from film also attending. A very wise move I think, and if it’s anything like last year worth every penny of the £5 ticket (if you buy in advance).

If anyone is fetching children they will be in for a treat being able to meet the real Darth Vader Dave Prowse and also see one in costume along with Storm troopers. After last years event I never stopped talking about it, especially the Goldfinger lecture by Norman. A few surprises are in store for all who come I know, but it’s not my place to let the cat out of the bag. All I will say is if you miss this baby you may kick yourself afterwards folks!

Better get on with some work this end…
Happy days.

Maybe Lee should climb up there and dangle his poster in view! [Big Grin]

Many would like to me dangle from the tower. [Smile]

Never seen that cam shot before. You never stop learning in this life Paul. The weather looks a bit bleak today via the camera, but yesterday we were in t-shirts and it was boiling.

Happy film show day!

Anyone noticed that Derann (or someone) has inadvertently changed the name of the event on the poster downloaded by Lee?

It's amusing for me, living in Croydon, to be seeing Dave Prowse in Blackpool as he lives about a mile from me! In the early 1980s, he was a celebrity attraction at a fete at a school that his son was at. Most people wanted autographs because of his Star Wars fame, but as a Hammer fan, I got him to sign a 'Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell' pressbook. If Derann wanted to have fun in the Saturday night film show, they could show an extract from one of his other two Hammer films on 8mm: 'Vampire Circus' or 'Horror of Frankenstein'. I hope someone gets him to tell the story of the time when he was working as a fitness consultant at Harrods and John Wayne walked in!

Adrian. Reading your note reminds me of my other hero Mr Pastry (Richard Hearne). He also used to support many fetes and also Children’s charities. A good hearted soul and full of fun.

Talking of young Dave Prowse, we watched a double bill of his films last night and finished with the three Green Cross ads he did just to make sure we cross the road safely at Blackpool in November. Dave tells some great stories in the audio commentary on the Hammer DVD’S and the Monster From Hell was fascinating.

It's worth dropping these onto the balance tracks of your favourite films if you have the facility.

Last time I saw Dave Prowse was when he had a table at the BFCC.

I'm still hoping to get up to Blackpool this year as I haven't been for yonks.

I popped into THE WHO shop at Blackpool and they are coming along to the event also which is great news. Also snapped this little photo of an unsuspecting victim staff member set up by the manager who was real nice bloke. The shop are pulling out all the stops advertising the event and I threatened taking along my 400ft reel of Star Wars to show on the Elmo at the shop. Nice to meet people in the trade who are dead keen and interested in what they sell and I think film buffs at Blackpool will find some interesting items from them on the big day.

My wife and I have only just returned from a brief visit to Paris and surrounding areas so playing catch up on the forum at present. Nice to see the bigger version of Blackpool Tower in Paris although missing the excellent Film Collectors event we have over here..

A little update...
Dont forget to have a look at the Dave Prowse website which is very VERY interesting.

I discovered, talking to Derann staff at the BFCC, that the hotel accommodation at the Savoy is now FULLY BOOKED, which has rarely if ever happened before, so clearly the message is getting through that this is an event not to be missed. Don't despair if you need a room, though, as I can recommend a very nice place just round the corner that may be able to assist.

It seems there are very few places left for the dinner on Saturday night, so act fast or you'll be in serious danger of missing out.

Adrian…As we said, get booked in coz this is going to be one hell of a corking event.
No surprise to me the Savoy is fully booked and it’s good to hear the hotel is a sellout as is the dinner now I believe. The advertising for this year has been very well handled I think and the evidence is a full hotel and I expect a near filled to capacity film collecting day. Crumbs, I have even already booked me space at the bar!

Its not very often I get so excited about a cine event these days but I can hardly wait to the start of the Blackpool weekend. One of my local video producing competitors is now also going for the day so the word is spreading rapid as he is going to buy a few new films from Derann and look for a projector. Bumped into him in town as he was also quite excited to be hunting REAL FILM! This all started as I do leave a projector in the studio and sometimes customers ask about it and I pop on a flick.

Ill be posting a link here shortly as I took a few mobile phone clips at Blackpool of the illuminations which some might like to look at via YouTube.

Watch this space!

What a nice weekend that was.
Visited some good friends and had a superb screening of a Hammer classic yesterday. We also went along to the Monster Ball event at Blackpool and met the stars, also collecting some very nice t-shirts and film cells. Kenny Baker from Star Wars fame was also there and looking forward to the film convention which he is also coming to.

On the way out of Blackpool we called at the Savoy Hotel where the Northern Film Collectors event is taking place shortly and can report they have done a lovely renovation on the hotel which is immaculate, and we were also greeted with the Derann poster in the entrance which has been framed on the wall.

Don’t know about the rest of you but I am buzzing with excitement and really looking forward to the film weekend with the main event on the 18th Nov 07. What a great month November is for film fans…

Just a short post as I have only just returned from the superb event at Blackpool.
I will be posting a report plus photos later this week but it was certainly an event to remember with the stars.

More shortly.
