On the subject of scope alignment test films.....
Here's a trick when that 50 footer is not enough to do the job.
Remove 12 feet from the small spool. Cut with your splicer.
Trim the head end with the film trimmer and auto load.
At five feet stop the projector.
Trim the autothread from the test loop.
Splice the head to the tail making sure there are no twists.
Run the repeat test loops as long as it takes to align the picture. Suppose you want to leave your booth and go into the screening room, and look up close at the screen masking.
When done, locate the splice and break. Then run down to leave the machine path.
Consider this as a sound test strip to check volume settings, and Pro Logic accoustics. Simply pick a test or dupe print, making sure it has active sound.
A repeat test loop allows you to take as long as you want, and the repeating image or sound track lasting only a few seconds gives consistent quality at peak levels, whether you check picture or sound, or both.
Test loops should be run only at prime installation or first time setup; and/or routine preventative maintanence. So it's not like you're doing lots of splicing and chopping those frames to the trash can.

"Where I come from there's a name for people who take things and don't pay for them..." I know the answer! I know I know! May I answer? In Italy we say "ladro" (generical) or "truffatore" (specific!) ladro= thief truffatore=fraudolent
Steven, do you think the place where you come from is similar to the place where I come from...?

Chip, I think you would do this forum a favour if you paid off your debts before you continue posting. It's not particularly nice to have to keep reading about things you have taken and not paid for.
Phil Sheard and Steve Osborne have also reported problems with you so it is unlikely it is just a single person on this forum casting aspersions. And speaking as a collector, the possibility that you have been ripping-off a releasing distributor could rather obviously affect the rest of us collectors.

I`m happy to pay pal steve $10 towards it if chip doesn`t do the decent thing, anyone else want to join me to at least sort of redress this unhappy going on. Sorry steve it must be getting you somewhat. Come on chip you strike me as an OK bloke, please pay up, sell the stuff even so you can. This forum feels like a group of friends and its a shame to have any clouds hanging over us, also you can happily post and chat and say interesting things once its all cleared up without any problems etc. best Mark.

Hi Mark --
Thanks for the kind offer, but this is mainly a matter of principle. I don't want other people to pay for the films because that doesn't address the real issue here - He agrred to buy the films and HE should pay for them - not someone else. I trusted him and let him have the films before paying for them, and he broke that trust. If you (and others) pay for the films, what sort of a message is that going to give to people -- "if you don't pay for something, it's o.k. - someone else will pay for it" ??? That's not a good message.

Steven,
Whilst I fully agree with everything you have said regarding this matter I know that Mark (who I believe also is owed money but might be wrong) meant well.
A fact of life but a hard lesson that trust is earned .

On the old Forum, Chip posted a series of really excellent notes on projection techniques and film maintainance. Possibly his addiction to super 8 overtook his financial reserves. I too wish he would clear up his financial problem, so we could all welcome him back as a valuable asset and old friend of the group.

Hi Tony and Steven, I did mean well and hope Chip sees that too. I`m a big believer in that if you show a person something good it can lead to good and a move thats important somewhere inside. Its easy for either person in a situation to be caught up in the negative effect and find it difficult to get away from it and find a way out of the problem. I dare say chip is stuck a bit in that. Curiously enough my eldest son was telling me a tale about when a friend of his went with his father to buy a particular expensive mattress lately and the cashier got chatting to his dad as they had a common interest. When they got home the father found the cashier had charged them £500 instead of the £600 price. I aksed my lad if they had gone back to pay the difference and no they hadn`t. Anyway I asked my son if he would have gone back and paid and he said no he wouldn`t either !!!!!!!!!!!!! Well I had to take stock not least of myself then and talk to him about whats important in a person and also that did he think it was Ok for the business to loose that money, what if the cashier had to make good the loss as they sometimes do depending etc etc and it did seem to go home. I was once given 50p too much change in an off licience and went back into give them it and he was surprised I did with such a small amount but thats a principle thing as well. Even practically its not worth 50p or a £100 for that negativity, it would cettainly eat at me. I`m sure chip must feel bad about it and want to sort it out. come on chip why not ask steven if you can pay maybe $20 a month by direct debit to clear it etc, steves a great chap and i`m sure would help you sort something out. I imagine you are reading this now and want to do something so come on go for it and clear the waters not least for yourself. best Mark.

Hi Brad --
Yes, you are correct.... I used to let people have prints before they completely paid for them fairly regularly - thinking that most collectors are honest and honorable.. I guess I was wrong...

Sorry Mark, but what you have said seems good and all that, but the simple truth is. The man has a collection of super 8 equipment and films, If it was me i would sell my last reel of film and projector rather than be in debt to a fellow cine collector, or anyone that i owe money to come to that, i just couldn't live with my self. Honesty between us all is a little thing to ask for. Chris.

Hi Chris I agree with you entirely and feel the same. I simply couldn`t live with myself. I hoped a look at things from the side and loosing it up a bit would make chip feel able to approach steve and sort something out. Has he done so Steve, hope so. If I were in possition such as Chips I would feel very very dissapointed in myself and the only way I could sort it would be to face it like a man and put it right and not just pay up but compensate as well. Anyway hopefully its sorted now? Best Mark.

Steven, if it makes you feel any better, I've gotten screw like this on several occasions (once for $1200) UNTIL I learned my lesson. Unfortunately, the odds of recovering your money are pretty low. People like this are your best friend until they get the goods in their hands, then they do a disappearing act. When you catch up to them, they are full of excuses. Every time I see this guy post it turns my stomach because I know he has screwed people on this forum and goes along like nothing happened. It's sort of like rubbing your face in it. And I don't give a S#%^ how good his previous posts were. These forums are about people not posts.

It's sad really -- I've dealt with hundreds of film collectors, and this is the only time where I've been ripped off. I let him have stuff before paying for it because he was local, and seemed to be a nice guy.... I also gave him some free films and free reels and cans as well.... He kept giving me one excuse after another for why he wasn't paying -- and then finally he just stopped answering my emails. It's been 18 months now....
