Hi,

I am just curious if anyone has bought the features listed at classic home cinema's web site. I understand that everything is in English (sound and screen credits) and are official liscensed releases. I'm gonna have to shell out the $800-$900 for a copy of Spider-man. The sequel was fantastic and while I should probably just be greatful the first one is available on film I'd hope that the second one would be available as well. I never expected the first one to be released on Super 8 but since it's out there I really should make an effort and support the release of new films on Super 8. I am curious though does anyone in here buy new features on a regular basis? It just seems like so much money especially when there are so many used features available for between $100-$200 on Super 8. Plus I know many here like myself collect 16mm too and there are even more features (and other goodies) available in that format. I can see myself doing this for Spider-man and the sequel but I can't think of any other movies I'd pay that kind of money for.

You'll find the review of the Spider-Man release on the 'Super 8 Film Review' pages of www.bfcc.biz.

Second hand films are undoubtedly cheap compared to new releases. However, if we don't support the new releases soon there won't be any recent stuff available on the second hand market at all. Spider-Man hasn't exactly set the world alight on Super 8 which is a real shame as I think it's the best feature release for many years. Given that, the chances of the excellent sequel appearing on the bootlace are very slim.

By the way, 'Spider-Man' was flat, 'Spider-Man 2' is 'Scope.

Thanks for the info on the review. It sounds like a winner. Looking over the classic sight again it looks like there are 6 motion pictures that are very recent. If you count First Blood and Empire as modern releases then there are 8 total releases. Any word on how any of these are doing? I know you said Spidey isn't setting any sales records but I'd hoped it would be doing better. I'm sure if the exchange rate was any where near the level it had been up until recently there would be more U.S. buyers. I'm still gonna buy one though it won't be for another 6 months or so. I hope sales pick up. It would be a real shame if the sequel doesn't show up on Super 8.

It would be good to hear from Phil of Classic on this, I understand that he reads this forum but unfortunately when he tried to register he did it as CHCINEMA and didn't use a real name which meant that none of his postings were successful.

So come on Phil, we know you're out there, try registering again as Phil Sheard and then tell us all about the new releases.

You never know it might generate some more sales [Wink]

Hi Mike did`nt you have some trouble and loose a lot of money on a german release some time ago, can`t remember the post but I do remember it was a lot of cash, over £200 went west on that new print.
I hear the ones classic do are in english so should be Ok there.
Would be great to have spiderman and the print sounds good but I`m afraid I will have to live with the trailer.

Yeah, sadly I lost a lot of money over a purchase of a new German print and it became a bit of a saga of sending it back to be re-recorded and then it came back sounding just as bad. I was given the impression by the dealer that it was all somehow my fault, something to do with the sound heads on my projectors despite the fact that they managed to play all my other prints perfectly well!

Having spent £400 I thought I ought to get a print with a sound track that sounded at least as good as a Derann release. As it was I got £140 back on the print which was then sold on to another forum member as a demo copy. I understand that he also returned it so I don't know who has it now?!

This is why it would be so good to hear a bit more about the new prints that are available, I would be in the market for another one if I had my confidence restored but I shall need to hear from a few more new release owners that their copies are ok before that happens [Frown]

Hi Mike, Yikes ooohh ouch etc, well over £200, cor a costly doo and amazing you would still give it a go.
Mind you knothing like film, that was why I wished we could have got 600 foot digests of newer stuff as that takes some of the variables out as one reel is easier to check etc, less variance between reels and so on.
Good luck on your next new release venture whatever it may be.

Thanks Mark, but the pain has all gone now, isn't that what hobbies are all about? Sometimes I think cine collecting is expensive and then I hear about the amounts of money people spend on fishing rods and mountain climbing gear and realise that in fact, it isn't!

I must be fair to the dealer though and say that although the print was only ever played whilst being recorded and then once after each re-recording by me it was several months before I asked for a refund, perhaps if I had ascerted my self earlier on and been a bit business like I might have got more than my £140 trade in against films from the list. [Frown]

"First Blood" is 'Scope and the extract we were loaned to show at the BFCC looked to me to be the best quality Super 8 'Scope we showed all day. "Rear Window" and "Rio Bravo" both looked very good flat prints.

"The Empire Strikes Back" has been available for about ten years. The master from which it was struck was a bit beaten up around the original 20 minute 35mm reel changes but is otherwise good quality.

"Titanic" ('Scope) looks pretty darned good too. Shame I just don't care for the film. But an extract of the sinking would be more than acceptable - just cut out the two awful leads.

I have bought a copy of the Spiderman feature from Phil and I have to say that the quality is probably the best I have seen. It's a real winner with superb colour rendition and a nice crisp picture.
Just need to get round to a stereo re-record from DVD.
The short "Rupert and the Frog Song" is also superb quality but its been cut which is a shame. It has the end missing where Rupert goes into the house to tell his mum the tale of his outing.
