Perhaps this is not so spectacular compared with re-recording, but as you may have known from my previous posts, I was so obssesed to collect 8mm in thier original artwork boxes. Some suggested to create our own cover using computer design, like what Andreas had done with "THE ARMAGEDDON".

But to me, the Original design is more collectable item, so I don't make custom artwork cover for my 8mm. The problem arises when I received a mini-feature of Wild Geese from German ("Die Wildgänse kommen") which came in 2 x 800 feet reel and the original cover of course no longer available. Luckily, the previous owner had sticked the original front cover on the 800" plastic case.

I was preparing to re-spooled "The Wild Geese" to the original size 4 x 400 for an easy storage, as well as to re-recording it with the English soundtrack.

But, I was so obsessed to have the original cover and moreover (sorry Andreas.... [Wink] ) I didn't like the cover which was in German, so I also tried to 'english" the cover without changing the original design. I am using all fonts that were on cover and re-placed them to make the English words.

So....now I am only going to re-recording the soundtrack, which I don't think would be hard, since dialogs were not that long in this movie. If I had done it...I will fully have an English "Wild Geese".

This title was not released in English soundtrack in UK or USA, wasn't it?

Dear Andreas, since I have only front cover, would be very much appreciated if you can post (or email me) with the backside cover.

Thanks,

Winbert,

Well done and good luck with the recording! Derann released a 3X400' version (I believe it is still listed in their catalog) with the same clamshell cover for all three parts. I'll scan it a little later for you.

I do wonder what some people do to there expensive films to wreck the original boxes like they do. With todays PC's and so many pictures availible from films i much prefer to make my own custom made boxes. Most of our collection is now made up of new covers and then the boxes are completly covered in SBP which gives them added strength. It's another part of cine collecting to compliment your films. Totally starting from sctrach i usually scan in some stills just like you've done with your Wild Geese film, erase all the writting and start again, i replace the running times to whats on the reel and also sometimes take off any ameture looking home movie logo's with something more professional.
What a difference. [Wink]

Winbert,

this movie was also released in full-length version (7x600') around 1986 by Roger Vollstädt Filmproduktion in Germany, but - as you can imagine - also with a German soundtrack.

Winbert, [Big Grin] fantastic new artwork!!!!!!!

but ... the german version is only 1200 feet (360m), UFA write on the boxes 110 m but the true length each reel is 90 m.....
all together about 60 minutes.

... do you already have the theatrical trailer?

... hmm, the electric-adapter of my scanner isn´t working ... have to buy a new scanner first to make new scanns of the artworks ...

Doug, what is the real running time of Derann´s "Wild Geese" ... if 60 min., than could it possible that it is the same edit??

And now a mystery for all. What is wrong on this original ufa-artwork????

Andreas,

I would say whoever the lady in the top left corner of this artwork is has nothing to do with Bette Midler (The Rose) and doesn't belong there. [Eek!] Did I get it right?

In regard to UFA labeling their reels as 110m, I think that's rather accurate. If each reel really was only 90m long, then a three-parter would add up to 270m (900ft), little more than an 800ft reel's worth of film. Which comes out to 45 minutes of playing time, not 60... (Correct me if I'm wrong...)

That´s right Jan. Would know why Laura Gemser came on a artwork of a Bette Midler film.

Yes, the most of UFA three parters have a running time of approx. 47 minutes....... but also marketing gave only appr. 90m per reel, when it was a digest.

WIld Geeese from UFA comes in 4 reels. So if it is 90m then total length is 360m.

BTW, Andreas, yeah it's funny to see how the company was cheating on buyers. If it is true that the total length is only 360m, they could actually spool it onto 3 x 120m, couldn't they?. But to have an extra 149 DM, they broke it up into 4 reels. [Mad]

BTW, Andreas , I always found a 149 DM price tag on 400' German reels. What was the value exchange to US$ at that time?

Bye

Oh. I thought it was 3 reels, not 4. [Roll Eyes]

Winbert,

1) yes that´s possible.
80 m releases of "Tim and Struppi" have only about 60 m.

2) 149,- DM was the price for each 400er reel color sound.
It was the suggested price (unverbindliche Preisempfehlung) from marketing, ufa and piccolo.
Retailer could sell at this price or for more or less. But the most sold for 149,- DM.

1976 1$ = 2,52 DM
1978 1$ = 2,01 DM
1980 1$ = 1,71 DM
1981 1$ = 2,27 DM

Jan,

ufa = 4 parts with real length of 360 m
Derann = 3 parts with real length of ???????

Geeees....that is not cheap!. If we take the average of US$1 = 2 DM than for the whole periode between 1976 to 1981 the price of a 400" reel was equal to US$72!. While in any Ken Film catalogs at the same periode I found a 400 reel Color/Sound was around US$52!! There was so much gap here!.

This release has been around some time from Derann 3X400ft. This version works well. Just recently watched the DVD with it's original stereo track. Would be worth re-dubbing the Super8 realease. Derann's print has the balance track on the film. Saw this film when it was first released and have liked the film ever since. I saw this at the Odean Elephant & Castle South London. It had a intermission and was in stereo. This cinema has been knocked down. Shame it had a open screen with tabs that used to swing round. Looked bit like a bed headboard.

Winbert,

don´t forget the different Value Added Tax.

At this time it was 14% in Germany.
