For the last couple of years I have been putting a lot of my super 8 (new and old) on brand new "Gepe" 8mm spools and cans; they did a great range of 200ft, 300ft, 400ft, 600ft and 800ft.

I thought that they were nice quality and ordered direct from "Jessops", a well know photographic store here in the UK.

I was a bit sad to click onto their website last week and see that they are now only listing the 400ft spool.

Is this the end of the "Gepe" 8mm spool range???

Does anyone know of an alternative manufacturer of new, good quality 8mm spools and cans in a variety of sizes?

Gepes are my favorites, and this would be pretty bad news to me.

I especially like their 300 footers because I always seem to have a bunch of films ready to spill off 200 foot reels and the extra capacity comes in handy without all the wasted bulk of putting a 230 or 250 foot film on a 400 footer.

I e-mailed them. Let's see what they say about it.

Good News,

Gepe e-mailed me this morning that the entire line of reels is still in production with no plans for cancellation.

That's good news, Gepe are also my reel of choice for spooling up my "home movies" . Very glad to hear that they are still available.

That is great news and quite a relief, thanks for that, Steve.

Just need to find a new supplier...I'll see if my local "Jessops" store can still order them in for me.

For those who don't know about GEPE reels, the 800 foot reel is very similiar in design to the classic glossy white Elmo 800 foot auto reel. But with the GEPE version, it is charcoal grey for color, has both meter and foot guages embossed on the flanges for both silent as well as sound film. The added plus is for the price you also get a nice snap plastic case, like the Bonum reels. Anyone interested in purchasing a great 800 foot reel (large hub) I highly recommend the GEPE brand. I have quite a few of these size only and like them very much.

Yep,

I keep one of these as the takeup reel for my Elmo ST-800. Because it was designed to operate with a large diameter takeup hub, the rewind was kind of wimpy until I got this reel. Now it's great!

The case is an added bonus since it can be kept safe and clean when it's not in use.

Take the 800 ft version and turn it into 1200 feet and I bet alot of us would be quite happy. Sadly though, it does not exist.

If I did that, it would just shrink to a 400ft reel instead [Big Grin]
