I've been wondering for some time now what the function of this part is. The metal part can be taken of the black plastic thingie.
I'm thinking it might be a mask of some sort to convert the projected image to widescreen.

This is for trimming the film; it needs a clean cut leader edge to thread without problems. Place the film in (I believe there's an arrow) and then bring down the raised part of metal, to trim the edge. That's what this important part is for.

Oh that it were... I'm afraid it's real identity os far more mundane; it's a film trimmer.

You pushe the end of your film into it so that it fits into the slot and a sprocket hole locates on the nipple and then you push the sprung part down to trim the end off your film, it makes the film thread more easily.
