I have a super 8 feature length print of ET. I also ran it in theaters back in 1982. I can tell you from experience the move is NOT scope. I think the problem is that not too many of us truelly understand the difference. That is, at times some of us think or assume that, if a print has those black bars on the top and bottom, that the print must have been scope in theaters. Whereas, this is definately not the case all the time. I am trying to make a point, and not to flame others that do not understand the difference. What I would like to see in the future is common terms, that is cinemascope would be squeezed and a proper lens is required to show it correctly; "letterboxed" refers to the black bars masking on the top and bottom of the screen for whatever the reason is the masking has been done; and "flat" meaning anybody can run it with any projector. It just gets to confusing to question the masking or hear the term "adapted scope.".
I don't know if my print of ET came from Italy, but the mastering quality is very poor to fair condition. The print suggests that it came from a 16mm dupe copy rather than a 35mm release print. When I found it though, it only cost me $50.00 bucks and luckily was in full english sound. Appears to be complete with no edits as far as I can tell. The Italians might not make great copies of American movies, but always remember they can't screw up the pasta!
Just my 2 cents worth on the subject.
