I removed all I could reach with my fingers, I wondered if any one could tell me how to remove the shutter/cog area out so I can clean the goo off the areas where the belts were and where the remnants are now. I aquired a second machine and other than the belts doesnt look too bad, but this one is a project! lemme tell ya, the belts are certainly harder to remove in this one. The st800 I had was much easier beltwise. I knew not to turn it on before I took the back off, apparently the last person that had it didnt.

The best I could do when it happened to me was to use a long swab with Goof Off, or Goo-Gone and try to get the hard to reach areas and make sure there is none on the areas that heat up, you may not get it all as long as there is not any on moveable parts you should be fine and be sure to get the pulleys that the belts go on if it came of the shutter you will notice the machine may be noisier than before but will work non the less.
I was told the machine would have to be rebalanced that was bull I spent almost 200.00 and could not tell the difference that they did anything.

Yes that was a load of bull! Just remove the sticky rubber and dont use any sharp instruments as the metal edge marks very easily.

Once the muck is off the machine will once more purr.

Yes...I had an St 1200 a few months ago..same goo..black...got all over the rug and my shirt..and everywhere. A projector expert and repairman told me that the best stuff to clean it off was actually a common product for cars....Gum Out. So I tried it and it worked beautifully. It took a lot of cotton swabs and some time, but I got it off. The rubber on the shutter wheel was the most difficult. But these guys are right...the machine seems to function just fine without it...maybe just a bit noisier.
