Your points are true of almost any company, even Derann, in thier earlier days. You'll four out of five great reels on a feature and a fifth that has off colour from the start.
From what I have observed, VIACOM features have tended to hold up better than other companies prints, (most notably NILES, eck!).
From what I have read, it comes down more to the bathes in the chemicals and how long they are allowed to soak, that cause more or less early on fade. I have heard the cardboard vs. plastic boxes argument concerning fade as well, as well as not placing your film prints on wood surfaces, (as the acids used in the wood can promote fading).
Personally, I store my potenially quick fade prints in a frost free fridge, (with selica gel packs in each freezer bag), and have had no problems since, (just taking them out to watch.)
