Ok, I've started listing again, this time it's Universal 8 400fters. I've put together as good a list as I can from my own collection, and those that I can find in old catalogues.

Edit: Doug has posted a far more comprehensive list further down this thread so I have removed mine to save confusion.

Just a thought and i'm not 100% Rooster Cogburn John Wayne ,wasn't this released as a 400ft by universal?

Yes it's quite a nice 2x400', but it's a bit rare, as this came out in Universal 8's last wave of releases, and there was not many printed, and if you see one you will have to pay a high price.

Doug is right, I have a Universal 8 catalogue that states that there were for U.S./Canada consumption a 2x400' of "Cheech and Chongs Next Movie", personally I've never seen one this side of the pond, but what about you U.S. collectors have you ever seen it?

These lists make a useful point of reference; it’s also interesting to know what was on offer and what might potentially be lurking out there on dealer’s lists.

I don't know what 4247 is, but 4248 is "Slapshot" (400ft)

Pablo : it took me ten years to find one print of the Blues Brothers. I hope you'll be luckier in your search.

I may be wrong, but I always thought that apart from the two-parters listed, there were also single 400ft-editions of "Sugarland Express" and "National Lampoon's Animal House". Can anyone confirm this?
Was there also a two-parter of "Smokey and the Bandit"?
Did the the scope editions always carry the same order numers as their flat counterparts?

I bought The Blues Brothers 2x400' (or should I say "2x300'"?)when it was released, and it was indeed one of the very last gasps of Universal 8. I remember at the time it took forever to receive it, and shortly thereafter Universal 8 folded up shop.

Another great list, thanks guys.

My vote for favourite is the Ali vs Shavers 400ft. It got fight of the year, round of the year (15) and was the last successful defense Ali made of his World heavyweight title.

It is a very close fight and has excitment all the way through. Shavers was throwing his bombs from the first rounds, Ali not only took them but rallied late to just edge Shavers out. Well edited too.

Ali had already started to slow both physically and verbally, this of course continued until finally diagnosed as Parkinsons.

Universal 8 made good sales from their boxing films relying on recent fights to spearhead their catalog unlike many others that used often very old fights. The U8 full colour covers were much better than their stylised almost B & W covers on other releases.

Got my print from Blackpool FCC when Derann Derann got a cartload of Universal 8 flicks and they were selling then very cheaply in the 90’s. Think we paid £14.99 if memory serves me right. Colour is now poor which matches the editing of it.

A few us locals bagged up on Universal 8 films and this was a bargain basement time for us all here in the UK and Derann looked after us very much that day. All films were new and un projected by the way.

Blues Brothers must be good coz no one has done a review of it yet!

In Scott MacGillivrays book "Castle Films - A Hobbyist's Guide" I read that "Universal 8" started business in April 1977 with thirteen new 400-footers. Four of them were comedies (A&C: #4007, 4008, W.C. Fields: 4010, Marx Brothers: 4011), but which were the other nine 400-footers? Does anybody have the 1977 catalogue so he can tell?
