Recently, for my Canon 1014 XL-S camera, I found a small timer known as the Interval Timer E. It appears to plug into the remote socket on the camera, and is round with a dial going from 1 to 10. It also has a red LED on the side. How do you use it...have tried it, and it appears to run the camera for three seconds, then switch it off.

As far as I know you set the camera to single shot and then you set the interval times to whatever number of seconds delay you want. If you set the delay to say 5 then the camera would take 1 shot every 5 seconds.
This is the sort of setup people would use for say watching a flower open but it has many other uses I'm sure.

The figures 1-10 range between a 1 second(ish) interval to a minute or so. The figures are approximate. The numbers do NOT correspond to exact or approximate seconds as Kevin suggests, they are arbitrary. The timer emulates the action of a manually operated wired electronic remote, so for correct operation as a time-lapse device/intervalometer the camera must be set to single frame.
