Paul, CIRO/GUILLOTINE super 8mm tape splicers work well, and fresh rolls of tape are available from a few sources online at reasonable prices. I've been using my two plastic versions since the 70s, and the splices hold up very well, and don't cover the main sound stripe. Also, although some have reported tapes coming apart when using cleaners/lubricants, i've had no problems. The only thing is, I get a better, straighter cut on the film ends to be spliced from the blades of my little HP super8/regular 8 splicer, than the Ciro/Guillotine blades....
