Hey All,

For starters I have been having a problem for a while. I will be watching something, and then put on another reel and there won't be sound. I will get a clicking sound when I turn on the volume, and then get a hum. I usually will turn it off for a few minutes, and then it comes back. Now I'm not being so lucky.

Today I tried spraying a cleaning lubricant for electrical parts in the knob areas, and took off the back, and sprayed it near the record button. still no sound, but the same clicking sound and hum. I even cleaned the mag head with alcohol, but still no luck. I'm sure it must be something simple, because when I do get sound, it sounds fine. Any help would be great!

Thanks, Brad

Brad,

Try to push the red button (recording button) when the projector in play position. Usually it will get the sound back.

You can do that without film in the projector.

Winbert is correct: the record contacts build up oxides over time which will prevent sound until you break the oxides by working the control. On my machine this happens so gradually that sometimes I don't realize it's going on until I find my volume control suddenly maxed out without the sound being loud enough.

(BTW:It doesn't matter which position the motor control is in.)

-just do yourself a favor and try this with the machine OFF and unplugged. Doing it under power makes a loud, unpleasant sound through the speaker.

My ST-800 has had this problem; it has also had a similar problem due to oxides on the jack contacts in the back panel. I fixed these by inserting and extracting a phono plug a few times. a typical headset these days is the right size.

Hi Brad

If you need soldering done and you can't do it yourself, Harmony Hut in Falmouth should be able to get it done and the turn around is quick. Ask for Frank and make sure you mention my name. Yep it's a hike from P-Town but he can save your Thursday night shows.

Hey All,

I very pleased that my Elm st 8oo is working fine again. I took it to High Performance Audio in Hyannis MA. I was getting nervous because This Thursday will be My annual showing Of The Phantom with Lon Chaney, at the weekly film series I do on Cape Cod. Chip thanks for the suggestion about the guy in Falmouth, but I had gone with this guy before in Hyannis, and he is bit closer.

There was a loose connection in the back, and he had to hard wire it. It took him a while to locate the problem, and thought at first it was the oxide build up. He cleaned all that as well too, and charged me $60 dollars which I don't think was too bad. [Smile]
