NORTHWEST FILM FAIR. NOVEMBER 17th 2013.

NEW LUXURY BLACKPOOL VENUE.

The next Blackpool NORTHWEST Film Fair will be at the HILTON HOTEL. North Promenade, Sea Front, BLACKPOOL. FY1 2JQ. The Hilton Hotel is situated approx. 400 yards from the Savoy in the direction of the Tower. It is a modern hotel with outstanding facilities. A large car park is situated at the side of the hotel, this is barrier controlled and the cost is modest. The dealer’s room is very spacious and has easy access from the service road at the front of the hotel. There should be no problems getting the heaviest of items in at this venue. There are numerous power points around the walls of the room. Lighting is of a very high level. Easy to see the dust even on the darkest items offered for sale. There will be an enlarged space for the Bring & Buy and Auction, also an area for tables & chairs where weary legs may be rested whilst you have a chat to old and new friends.

There will be a nicely appointed cinema with approx. 70 upholstered seats, details of the 8mm and 16mm film programmes will be announced nearer the time, but it is also hoped to have something special again.

Food and drinks will be available in the Restaurant and Bars. Hot Pot will be on the menu especially for Film Fair visitors.

The Saturday Dinner will be at the Hilton and as last year is being organised by Adrian Winchester. Call Adrian on 0208 6560168 for full details and to reserve your place

Accommodation for the Film Fair is available at the Hilton. A number of rooms have been reserved for Film Fair visitors. Bookings for these rooms MUST be made and paid for by

I want to spend money on films, not rooms. Can one still go, even if staying at another hotel or is it just for those who stay at Hilton?

re the new venue at the hilton
rooms are similar price to any other hotels in blackpool .admission to the film convention is the same as last year £5.00 .you can choose your accomaodation anywere in blackpool, if you want to pitch up a tent up on the beach you can do that also .every one is welcome to the film convention whether you are staying at the hilton or not

I've just booked my room for the Saturday & Sunday night...it works out CHEAPER than it did at The Cliffs or The Savoy! Plus, the facilities are far better...such as the much bigger swimming pool!

I'd really like to go and I don't need anything fancy, just a clean room with toilet and shower (can be old as the first film ever made) but clean is nice :-)

Got to www.kayak.com and you can pick the city and sort based on price. You will get plenty rooms.

Nearly as many as I have for the East Lancashire Film Fair on the 27 April David!!
You will beat our event though come November but joking apart it is really nice to see some new dealers booking tables in 2013 and pleased they are spilling into the legendary Blackpool weekend at the sunny seaside. Film lives which is great all round!

As with all events around the country, use them or loose them.

David. I wonder if you have ever thought of having a theme for the NW event as it would attract more people to it. Perhaps something along the lines of
‘We’re Going Ape’ Classic monsters from the silver screen.
You would get some of the classic monster collectors along as well as memorabilia collectors. You could screen a special programme of films for this which would go down very well indeed.

Saturday 16 November. Enjoy a three course meal in the luxurious surroundings of Blackpool's 4 star Hilton Hotel. This will be followed by a one hour 16mm film show featuring a great selection of shorts, trailers, etc, compiled by James Cecil - the first ever Blackpool Saturday night 16mm show! With Mr Cecil's highly-promising show of 16mm rarities lined up, I can't say that there has been any demand so far for Super 8. BUT if anyone wants to compile a Super 8 programme and bring a Super 8 projector, I'd be only too pleased to add it to the entertainment, after the 16mm show. Alternatively, if the dinner survives in 2014, a new volunteer will be needed to compile the film show, so a programme on Super 8 will of course be very welcome then. [Smile]

Just a note for those who travel to Blackpool by train: tickets for mid-November are now bookable, but DON'T book just yet as the non-discounted fares are appearing in advance of the cheap ones. E.g. I checked dates about two weeks before the event and vastly lower fares were available, so we need to hang for a few days. I'll post here when the cheap fares appear online, unless anyone beats me to it.

As for 2014.. I find the multi gauge film presentations are hugely popular so what about Std 8, Super 8, 9.5mm sound, 16mm, 17.5mm and a bit of 35mm. All things are doable and the north west collectors will be keen to support it I know along with some advance planning.

I'm pleased to confirm that Simon is pencilled in for a 2014 Super 8 show that will include unique material shot at Blackpool conventions!

I was afraid that there could be a shortage of volunteers to keep the Saturday night entertainment going, but instead there could be scope to extend it through the night - thereby saving the cost of a night's accommodation, which will mean more money to buy films on the Sunday! [Smile]

The cheaper fares now seem to be coming up but you need to be flexible to get the best prices. E.g. you can book from London to Blackpool for only £16 single if willing to travel VERY early on the Friday. I need to spend a night in Wolverhampton on the way so I discovered that various services from Wolverhapton to Blackpool are only £8. I also managed a late afternoon Monday booking from Blackpool to East Croydon for £17. Shopping around can be worthwhile: e.g. the £17 train was on the Virgin site but completely missing on another site I usually use!

Maurice - sorry, I didn't see your message earlier. I'm not aware of any change of rules but I know that the discounted prices are not always precisely 'in sync' with the first opportunity to buy tickets. I can't say if that applies to all routes and operators, but when it comes to buying tickets from South London to/from Blackpool, I have seen more than once this year that if I look ahead to the tickets available for journeys three months (or just under) away, only expensive tickets are on offer, but if I check dates about 2 weeks earlier, then the cheapest options also came up.

Just passing on that I've been advised that a dinner attendee who tried to book a room at the Hilton was told that the rooms (for Film Fair attendees) are now fully booked. So, that's bad news for anyone still hoping to stay there, but it's good to hear that all the rooms were snapped up by September!

Needless to say, anyone who doesn't yet have accommodation should not be discouraged as there are countless rooms available elsewhere in Blackpool. Lots of people have their favourites - personally I can recommend the Collingwood Hotel which is in a road to the side of the Savoy. B&B was £27 per night last year.

I must correct the post of a few days ago regarding rooms at the Hilton. The person who was told that no rooms are available at the Hilton must have failed to specifically ask about the allocation for Film Fair attendees. It has now been confirmed that there are seven rooms still available, but anyone wanting to book one MUST SPEAK TO JULIE VINCENT on 01253 627977. The hotel is fully booked (other than this allocation) so anyone checking online or speaking to anyone else will be told this. Also, these rooms will only be available UP TO THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER, so please make any bookings by then.

I'm glad to say that we have some Forum members making their first ever appearance at a Blackpool Dinner this year and I look forward to seeing all attendees next Saturday. I've had a few 'last minute' people booking in the last week (and booking accommodation in a hotel conveniently close to the Hilton) - if anyone else would like to do so, tomorrow is your last chance as the Hilton is asking me for the final number on Tuesday. Apart from the food, film show and quiz, I can confirm that there will be another fantastic raffle this year - you'll be amazed when you see the prizes!

Really pleased to see the 9-5 sound demonstration programme will be included so a double yay from me!

Popped into the Hilton again and they kindly showed me the traders room which is lovely with gleaming lights. Rather a posh venue Mr Guest has booked after much effort and time giving so its looking like this will be quite a wonderful film day and not long now either.

As Blackpool nears here are a few top tips which I hope help visitors.
Blackpool has over 400 places to eat but there is a traditional old English Fish and Chip shop at the top of the road (273 Dickson Road) just behind the Hilton where you can dine in or take away. A set meal is around £7 including a drink. If you are looking for somewhere to go for drinks ‘The Gynn’ (341 Dickson Rd) is also on that road but to the left as you reach the top of the hill and 5 minutes walk. Anyone who missed booking in for Saturday’s dinner and film evening may like to know they also have entertainment on a Saturday evening closing at 11PM with a good choice of ales etc.

I just wanted to pen a few words about the North West Film Fair.
The November weather was kind to us as we set up stall early in the morning for the event and yes the beautiful Hilton Hotel dealer room was indeed fully booked and fully stacked for prospective buyers. A long que had formed ready for open time and the enthusiasm for film was very noticeable throughout the day with a very good choice of film material and all manner of projectors etc. Many unusual films were on offer including a super 8 print of The Untouchables, a Star Wars feature sold within the hour and we also had many 16mm and 35 films available. Other film gauges were not forgotten including 28mm and also beloved 9.5mm with quite a few sound films on offer along with sound projectors. The event was also being filmed on super 8 by three film makers including young Simon Fairclough and myself with us all using 200D film which was rather interesting. Event organiser David Guest who as we know is a professional showman had arranged another room for the cinema which also had its new scope screen installed along with Super 8 Stereo and wait for it 9.5mm sound projectors. I did managed to see the 9-5 sound show and it was the most professional presentation of 9-5 I have seen in over 40 years visiting movie events with perfect projection by enthusiastic Don. That good looking chap Bob handled the Super 8 shows with a good selection of films throughout the day which kept movie buffs thrilled I am sure.

There was a buzz at the event I have not seen for many a year with sales also being very good, most popular I would say being the Derann Disneys perhaps due to Christmas coming up as well. Prices were as usual for the north very reasonable and not off the wall which does help make the hobby more accessible to newcomers I believe. All in all then a very healthy looking event and David did put so much effort into it which obviously paid off dividends. It was nice when chatting to fellow collectors to hear many were returning home with friends to project some films as well so this also extended the day further for them. Admission to the very full film day was only £5 and excellent value for money. The hotel staff were very helpful and polite with a spotless venue with excellent parking for both dealers and visitors so all in all a memorable day.

Well done Mr Guest and your helpers who made the North West Film Fair a resounding success. [Cool]

My wife Diane and I have just returned from a most thoroughly enjoyable weekend in Blackpool. A very BIG THANK YOU must be extended to David and his team for a perfect event, held in the finest venue ever. It is always a pleasure to meet familiar faces from my Derann days and rest assured we will be attending again next year, subject to work commitments. A very enjoyable day. This year there was definately more Super 8mm on offer this year than last year and the venue was very good indeed. Nice to meet up with old friends again, not having attended the last BFCC, due to ill health.
As others have said, the "atmosphere" was more "film related" than it has appeared to be over the past couple of years.

Blackpool was great 😊 probably the best one for years and the venue was excellent too.

Far more Super 8mm for sale than previous years and I came away with a full bags full of films as usual.

Hats off to David Guest for reviving the Blackpool convention as it was really on its last legs a few years ago.

The film shows were great too and Bob Nicholls projection was second to none,I thought thought he was projecting 16mm as the quality of the Super 8mm show in the morning was so good!!

Adrian Winchester provided a great evening on Saturday night with his dinner and film show with a lot of interesting short films shown and who can forget the singing postman 😄😄

A superb weekend all in all and the venue is now officially booked for 2014 too 😊😊

Yet again another superb event. Blackpool really has returned to the heyday of cine, even better than it was say twenty years ago. Dave had everything well organised and we must thank him for injecting new life into this well-loved event giving it a very secure future! The new hotel was easily the best I've ever stayed in; food, room and facilities were amazing. I will be booking next year for what has to be the best event of the year.

Adrian Winchester provided another classic evening on the Saturday. I have never laughed as much, nor won as many prizes! Again, this event cannot be improved upon. Thank you Adrian for all your efforts, which I know were appreciated by everyone. I was filming on Super 8 (200D film) which I hope to show next year at the dinner.

Yes its got to the stage that whenever I see adverts for new releases coming in, nowadays I always add several months to that. Phil is always upbeat about the new releases on his website but Im not confident they will arrive anytime soon. But all you can do is wait. Im just glad that new prints are still being struck.

Doug. Unfortunately Konga was not included in the super 8 programme so he stomped off back to Blackpool zoo for a hot date but he will return rest assured.

People are still talking about this fabulous weekend and I would put it right up there with the Blackpool 80’s film conventions. It is a really unique one this more so as you have a resort outside the hotel door with the sea etc making for quite an amazing time. Really nice event and from a traders point of view sales were very high indeed with lots of interest in all the film gauges. As mentioned previously you will find film and equipment prices lower here than the south so it does make sense to make the journey if you can. Wonderful day which we will remember for many a year I am sure..

I went down on the Sunday, as I have been doing since the 80's and have to say this was the best convension I have been to since certainly the early 90's. A BIG BIG hats of to David, I cannot thank you enough for reviving this great event when all of us thought it was over with the demise of Derann. I have stayed at the Hilton many times so knew what to expect, GREAT choice David, well done. It was the largest haul of super 8 films I have ever purchased at a convention, it will take me weeks to get it all cleaned and viewed, also it was nice to meet up with Gary and Dianne again and also chat to fellow collectors, to all those who didn't go and wished they had, mark it on your calender for next year, UNMISSABLE, Del.

I think that it's great that film enthusiasts have events like this to meet, and this time in such comfortable surroundings, the friendly staff, all night bar, leisure facilities and excellent food in the Hilton made for a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

It's not just down to the organizers but also to the collectors that make the effort to come from far and wide to these events that keep the hobby alive, and this year if you did not make the effort I am sorry to say that you have missed out.

There was a real buzz to this years event, the Saturday evening really was great fun. Relaxed atmosphere, rare entertaining films shown and amazing raffle prizes on offer , I won a mint Derann Super8 scope feature of "Logan Run"!

Sunday the Cinema was packed all day, good shows never seen 9.5 before. Many rare and unusual items on offer in the dealer room which you would not find anywhere else, and at bargain prices. I went home fully loaded.

Thanks to David, Adrian and all involved. I am looking forward to next year. Now I need a few days to recover from those late nights drinking and chatting to 1.30am in the bar.

I must endorse the positive feedback regarding Blackpool. It was a matter of survival in 2011 followed by consolidation and a return of the dinner in 2012, but this year there was a sense of moving into an exciting new era, particularly due to the inspired move to the Hilton, which provided us with the most spacious, attractive and convenient facilities we have ever known at this event. It must have been the highest attendance for years and what 'rewards' those coming found in the dealers room! Some of the 16mm features on offer (e.g. 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' and 'Carrie') were a bit out of the ordinary and there was no shortage of 8mm too. The bargains were amazing - e.g. EFS had a box of £20 16mm features, that was nearly empty by 10.20 am when I saw it! The Bring and Buy stall was exceptional too, with more bargains that included moderately rare Super 8 400' digests for an astonishing £3 or £4, plus several optical sound features I'd never previously come across, such as 'Love at First Bite'. It also had plenty of nice condition Elmo 1200' reels for only £10 each. I bought 3 films on the B&B (including a 45 minute 1989 16mm dance-related documentary) and only spent £11!

As mentioned, there was a real 'buzz' that reminded me of the old days, with film retuning to the fore. The film shows were packed out and I think David plans to have a larger cinema next time. My only disappointment was the lack of new releases in the show where they were due, but of course that's down to the lab and it reinforces how regrettable it is that there's no competition in an era when most labs are crying out for business.

Thanks to those who have posted kind words about the dinner - I'm glad everyone enjoyed it so much. Considerable credit is due to the Hilton for providing excellent food at a very reasonable price; even the prices in our private bar - e.g. £3.40 for a pint of bitter - were less than I expected. The raffle has become so popular that the income this generates means that we will now have a budget that can be used to enhance the event further and the ticket price next year may well be less than cost price! James Cecil showed what a good idea (I think) Bob Nicholls had when he suggested a few years ago having a new presenter each year, as collectors are sharing the 'specialities' in their collections, which enabled James to offer astonishing sights such as city scenes from 1905 and a commercial from the silent era in colour! James also screened an old commercial for a Kellogs promotion which showed the cine equipment offered as prizes. His documentary about Norfolk's 'Singing Postman' was another entertaining rarity that probably no one else had seen. Thanks are also due to David Watson - who I welcome to the Forum following his recent first post - who played an important part in making the dinner a success. I'm also grateful to the friendly Hilton staff who bent over backwards to be be supportive - e.g. offering to erect their own 8 foot screen, which we decided to use.

As Lee has said, there's a great sense of cameraderie at Blackpool, with the friendly chat starting before the events and continuing well after midnight, which means that during the Film Fair it's easier to focus on what's for sale and the shows. Those staying at the Hilton clearly experienced unprecedented luxury, but some of us staying elsewhere had a superb Sunday night carvery meal in the Hilton followed by a Super 8 show in the lounge/bar of our hotel, which kept the fun going until 12.30am on Monday!

I detect signs here and there of rivalry between the BFCC and Blackpool with both wishing to be 'the best', and there's no harm in that if it remains good-natured, but in my opinion BOTH are the best as they each have fantastic attributes that are unique to their own event. I was delighted that Ealing had a comparable 'buzz' and the best attendance for a few years, and the fact that this also applied to Blackpool means that we can go into 2014 with greater confidence. If you have only been to one, I beg you to try the other because you won't be disappointed. I didn't manage a proper holiday this year but I had such a fun-packed time in Blackpool that I wouldn't have exchanged it for a week elsewhere. Everyone in Lancashire always seems to be friendly and hospitable and Blackpool itself looks better each year due to the fortune the local council is spending on improving the promenade and other parts of the town. If you're not convinced yet that the trip will be well worth making in 2014, you probably never will be!

It is now clear that the selection of the Hilton was a stroke of genius on David's part. He seems to have given the whole collecting scene a huge boost.
I suspect, in retrospect, that David now thinks that some forum members were correct in alerting him to the popcorn issue. I doubt that the Hilton staff would have appreciated greasy popcorn all over their beautiful carpets.

I wonder if there could be a slight misunderstanding regarding different types of popcorn? The types I see in UK cinemas, sometimes spilled on the floor after the film, are always a dry and non-greasy type, so wouldn't leave a problematic residue on carpets even if people trod on it. It also doesn't have a very strong smell. Is there a different variety sold elsewhere?

Well Adrian, most people I see with Popcorn in cinemas here seem to go for the option of having butter poured on it, which needless to say makes a very greasy mess.
If David could sell the popcorn totally dry, it may not be an issue, but I would certainly ask the Hilton if they would have any issues with it beforehand.

I david guest would like to thank all the forum members for their kind words ,and as Adrian said re cinema this has now been extended to a 200 seater ,re popcorn there are several types of popcorn mine is the toffee coated popcorn and its not sticky and is served in a cone or a bigger portion in a box.i also have asked the Hilton re selling popcorn and they have no objection, if fact they said it was a great idea

As I hoped, we have ironed out the popcorn issue by identifying major cultural differences! The pouring of butter that Paul refers to is unheard of in the UK. Cinemas here generally offer a choice of fresh sweet or salted popcorn, but the toffee variety that David mentioned can also be bought, sometimes in fairly small bags, in some shops and cinemas, with the brand mame Butterkist.

Graham - no Super 8 films were shown after the dinner; it was a historic first ever 16mm presentation! One or two posts here refer to some of the content, which was all extremely rare, out of the ordinary material.

I saw part of the show that would have had the new releases. I can recall it included 'Pieces of Silver' and a railway film, but I missed the title of the latter.

I'm pleased to say that all being well - and hopefully the success of this year's Film Fair has assured the immediate future of the event - Lee is provisionally pencilled in as presenter of the 2015 film show! There has been an great response from collectors and I don't have a vacant film show slot until 2017. The evening finished around 11.15pm this year so it's probably just as well that there was only one film show, although I have a volunteer to provide a short comedy spot next year!

Well I think this years events have been the best for several years and the venue the Hilton Hotel the best ever. To start with
The convention dinner was a great evening the meal being one of the best of any of the convention dinners I know I have been to all of them, the film quiz was challenging and fun,the raffle went down well and everyone seemed to enjoy the rare and unusual
items shown in the 16mm film show, congratulations and thanks
must go to Adrian Winchester for organizing such a great night.

The Sunday convention, again this years I think was one of the best for a number of years as others have already said it did seem to have buzz to it,which was missing from some previous years. The dealers room was large well appointed and well lit
the Cinema room was comfortable and well blacked out, a good selection of super8 and 9.5mm films shown, well done to Bob Nichols and Don Sykes.

David Guest's decision to change the venue to the Hilton hotel
was inspired it would very hard to find a better place for the convention. Much praise and thanks must go to Mr.Guest and his helpers for their efforts and also to the hotel staff for such a great day.. already looking forward to next years convention. [Smile]
