I'm looking to buy a film splicer or Super 8. I found a Wurker S8 I believe is the model number. They want $125.00 for it. Is it worth it. I have heard it is one of the best. The best thing about it right now is it's available!! Thanks, and input would be appreciated.

If you buy a Wurker you will also need to buy the pre-perforated tape patches. I recommend the CIR splicer which uses easily obtained tape rolls which the splicer perforates as it cuts.

One difference between the Wurker & CIR S8 The Wurker leaves both soundtrack free. The CIR wraps round and leave the main track free.
The CIR would be cheaper to use in the long term though.
I use both Wurker for S8 CIR for 16mm.

It's quite true what David says, but you need a very acute pair of ears to notice a sound drop-out of a twelfth of a second.

Thanks for all the advice. Favio, Italy is a little too far away to purchase that unit. also I can't make out what the ad says cause I don't speak Italian. I assume it is the metal version? I found the not so good plastic version on Ebay USA for $50 which is about the best price I've seen so far. Good enough for occasional use? Thanks.

Craig - The guillotine splicers have dropped in price on eBay in the last month or so. If you check the "completed" auctions you'll see where even nice metal units have been had for under $50. Might require a bit of patience but it can be done. Lee

Hi Craig, the cheapest splicer is of course the cement one, but seeing as there are so many different film stocks, the CIR is the cheapest & best, it tapes & perforates exactly, no problems, no fears of not getting tape. CIR splicers are the best.

Thanks folks. I ended up with two CIR guillotine splicers. One too many, For a film novice like myself I think they work great and are a no -brainer device. Perfect! I have no idea how well the splices hold up. Now all I need is some leader tape for stock for the odd film that has none or almost none.
