When I collected films first time around, I used to have both the films mentioned above.

I used to love "That'll Be The Day" as a 4x 400ft print. Cannot quite recall who released it now.

Anyhow question is, does anyone still have a print of this excellent film to tell me whether or not the colour is even remotely acceptable today?

I look out for it and on very odd occasions, I have seen the odd copy, but would only consider buying if the colour can, in some instances, be holding up ok.

I must admit even my copy that I had previously in the 90's wasn't brilliant and was also quite grainy but it wasn't shifting towards red, just a little Brown as though by now they could be almost sepia?

Andrew - I think it was released by Derann as a 4 x 400ft and a 400ft digest. I am not sure but I think they also did "Stardust" but I could be mistaken on that.

I have the 400 ft versions of both. Both were from Derann. According to an old catalogue both had 1 and 4 reel versions That'll be the Day to be available from late 1978 and Stardust early to mid 1979.

Andrew im with you on this one. I also had both, Derann did indeed do the 4 x 400ft of that'l be the day but stardust was only done as a 400 footer. I sold stardust because i thought the digest wasn't very good and ended early in the film. But i sold that'l be the day purely to raise money at the time. The quality was ok and the colour on mine was very good but i have also been looking for a good feature of that.l be the day to put back in my collection, the print was a little grainy but they were all like that.
Its one of those features i wish i hadn't sold.
by the way, i may be wrong on stardust only being a 400 footer but i cant recall ever seeing a feature version of it on 8mm.

No you're right Tom, should have elaborated but I will now instead, I knew Stardust was only ever available as a digest whereas That'll Be The Day" was always an abridged feature.

Yes, as I said, I knew it was grainy, I saw it first time around, but I was just wondering if there was any hope on holding out to find another before obtaining the double Bill full length on Blu Ray for a tenner!

It will be perfect watching it that way, but as you know we don't strive for perfection in the cine world, just a fantastic nostalgic watch with plenty of grain, loads of noise and set up hassles as well as trying to perfect a 30 to 40 year mag stripe to give us something resembling a lossless toneally perfect track like that of the modern day digital variety.

If I can find one relatively unscathed for no more than fifty quid, I guess I will take a gamble on the grain and sepia issues and work the track to the best that can be achieved from the guage.

Hi Andrew,

I had a copy of "That'll be the day" - the 4x400ft print - which was great with a brilliant cast - David Essex, Ringo Starr and the late great Billy Fury and I stupidly sold it several years ago and like you Andrew - I've been trying to find another print.

Looks like I am in queue of at least 3 then David for that one illusive mint print (still in original boxes) that may, or may not, be still out there! [Wink]

My 400' of 'That'll be the Day' was quite nice when I got it but is badly faded now. I can't be 100% certain that there are no low fade prints of either title but I doubt it as I can't recall it being offered new in 1983 or later.

I have two 16mm prints of 'Stardust' with good colour so I'll be selling one eventually, but it will be lacking the second half of the end credits.

i had that'll be the day but gave it to my friend colours were ok he was driving me nuts over it so i had a couple of elvis for it i regret it now arghhhhhh

No seriously though, I'd love to find another even with just half decent colour so long as it wasn't full of emulsion scratches from a dodgy ST! Original boxes would be nice also, they looked great for this film.
