The test print of the True Lies digest is currently being striped and will then be shipped out to The Reel Image. Hopefully approval will be forthcoming after checking print/image quality on this polyester scope release.
This was first announced back in December of 2014, so as a reminder this is a two part release. This 600 footer (31 minutes) is Part One, which covers the first 2/3 of the film with a natural break that ends with Harry rescuing his wife from the limo before it goes off the bridge. Part Two (12 minutes) starts with the news that their daughter has been taken hostage and continues through the end. The second part will be out in a few months.
The 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me is getting a full feature release in both Super 8mm & 16mm! No details on price yet, however scope prints of this title should be available from both Classic Home Cinema & The Reel Image towards the end of the year.

Man, it just makes my day to hear that super is still being released, with brand new releases! (Even if they are waaaaay beyond what I can afford!)
until now, "The Spy Who Loved Me" was only available as a super 8 optical sound feature and that, slightly edited!

I'm probably very late to the party with this, but is Captain America still available?

John,
I'm sure it is. Check in with the above mentioned sellers.

What is about "The Hobbit" Super 8 Trailer?

I always thought that this trailer would have made a most excellent trailer, and a full 200ft reel at that ...

The Spy who Loved Me is quite a long film at 125 minutes. Based on the True Lies price of $350 for forty minutes the James Bond feature should work out at $1050 / £690. It is really upto the collector whether they feel it is worthwhile to spend that amount of money on a feature. If the film appeals to collectors it will sell. One concern would be that the film is now 38 years old so a proper review of the super 8 print would be a major deciding factor for buyers. It is courageous for dealers to still release super 8. If they have produced a print to the quality of Derann they deserve to be applauded and supported for their efforts.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 24, 2015, 03:58 PM:
The stripes are the main issue for me nowadays Mike.
The only way you are going to get Main & Balance stripes is with Acetate stock.
I really do not like Acetate when compared with Polyester.
My main projector runs far noisier with it, it is also too brittle for my liking especially when you consider the cost of these new prints!
If pre striped Polyester stock was still available, I would be extremely interested in new prints.
As things stand, I don't want to pay this kind of money for either single striped pasted Polyester prints nor twin striped Acetate ones.
having looked at new shorts printed on both of these stocks, I haven't been impressed with either.
A far cry from Derann prints in their latter hey day!
I know of collectors who have paid over a grand for recent releases and then regretted their decision due to colour grading issues, slitting issues etc etc.
I would need to see and trial some short test material before I would be happy to part with this kind of money on anything released now.
One of the most tempting and best recent released films I have seen was titanic. It was a stunning print.
For that particular print then yes, for anything else..I remain sceptical for now.
Posted by Mike Newell (Member # 23) on September 24, 2015, 05:13 PM:
I totally agree with your points Andrew. I don't think it is realistic for collectors to be asked to shell out nearly £700 for a feature blind. I think some kind of presentations or review of the product is needed to show what is on offer. To simply be asked pay your money take your chance is not a serious option.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 24, 2015, 07:34 PM:
I could not agree with you more Mike and sadly, this is coming from someone who is crying out for new prints of the standard I have become accustomed to watching from Derann while Derek was still with us. God Bless him.
Unfortunately, until someone makes Super 8mm sound cameras a hip and fashionable accessory again, and then in turn turns back the hands in time where the big 3 are concerned, we seem to be stuck in a rut with these attempts sadly.
I doubt it will, or can ever happen, but then again, I thought that once about another love of mine on the footballing front, so you just truly never know in life I've found.
Any Oil Sheiks love S8???

New releases were projected at the last BFCC and nonbody said there would be no review of new films in the future. There is even a dedicated section for that on this forum.
Posted by Tom Photiou (Member # 130) on September 25, 2015, 06:53 AM:
I'm sure there will be a review, but give me a 600 foot opening to Saving Private Ryan or even Zulu any day.
Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on September 25, 2015, 09:13 AM:
Tom - if you can establish some demand for such a release of either title, I'm sure Steve/Phil would be happy to consider it - especially if someone can come up with a 35mm print - but I can't help thinking that in terms of presenting shows, digests will generally go down better, because an audience engrossed in the first 30 mins of a film is liable to be left wanting more!
Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on September 25, 2015, 12:45 PM:
I remember mentioning that first reel of "Ryan" years ago and I agree that it would make a top notch release for super 8, and all on one 600ft reel!
Posted by Mike Newell (Member # 23) on September 25, 2015, 05:51 PM:
A lot of negative vibes and low interest considering that a fairly modern action mini feature and a full length James Bond movie are talked about as imminent releases. I would say the likelihood of any Spielberg movie coming out shortly on super 8 would be nil. The possibility of getting a legal release are zero and it would take an extremely brave or silly individual to try and release a bootleg version. They would stand the risk of be sued for everything they own with possibilty of jail time as well. I actually feel sorry for the remaining dealers. They source material that they could release based on the fickle demand of collectors. When they do what do they get. Too expensive, I want the quality that Derann produced or thats nice but I wanted the other film. In 2015, I am amazed that there are still individuals prepared to risk releasing movies on super 8. Considering the hazzle, grief and effort plus the financial risk they are to be saluted. If the product is good enough putting aside minor faults which you are bound to have with these type of releases then reel super 8 film fans should support them with their custom and not just fill cyberspace with hot air! It took a lot of courage for Derek and Derann to continue to release super 8 during the 1980s to 2000s He was backed up by collectors who bought and bought big. If we hadn't you would have very little to look at on your projectors now apart from pink digests.

I honestly don't have a problem with the stripes but I do prefer the mylar base. The German lab does a great job.

Hi Mike
absolutely excellent post - your insight and years of experience come through as allways.
I have to say if I was still into 8mm I would have been excited by "Spy who Loved me". Like you say though the quality would have to be good for me to shell that kind of cash out. I would think it would have made a brilliant 2 x 600 with a bit of creative editing.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 26, 2015, 03:31 AM:
Never Say never, while still a great watch, really does need to be longer to retain the story without confusion.
If you didn't already know the film, while entertaining, I don't necessarily think that you'd know exactly what the plot is.
I actually think it is a good thing to release these type of films only full length.
This will still appeal to serious collectors so long as the quality is spot on.
Posted by Rob Young. (Member # 131) on September 26, 2015, 07:43 AM:
Guys, as much as I do dearly love that new super product is being released, quote...
"fairly modern action mini feature"
True Lies 1994.
21 years old.
Also, let us not get into copyright, because as some us old timers well know, some so called "film collectors" out there will go to extreme lengths to sabotage releases on bootlace.
Posted by Paul Browning (Member # 2715) on September 26, 2015, 08:19 AM:
I say well done to those who put time and effort into getting these new super 8 products to market. The choice for new product is less now than ever before, leaving those who make the effort thinking "why bother". The new James bond feature sound fantastic, and arnie still has appeal even with his wooden acting.
Posted by John Hourigan (Member # 111) on September 26, 2015, 11:14 AM:
Rob, I'm not aware of which "film collectors" you're referencing, but aren't these releases "sabotaging" copyright? Or were the proper rights clearances achieved? In my daily work, I have to abide by and adhere to copyright laws and regulations, as it's a very serious requirement.
Posted by Mike Newell (Member # 23) on September 26, 2015, 11:19 AM:
The likelihood of up to date releases after 2000 ever being released on super 8 are zilch. Now with most cinemas are digital there will be no film prints remaining in circulation. 16mm collectors adjusted to this reality from mid 1980s onwards. True Lies may not two or three years old but it ain't The Jazz Singer either. It would actually benefit as a mini feature with the best scenes making a cracker digest. The James Bond feature the Spy who loved me would be one of the better Moore movies. If the quality was fine it would be a purchase I would make but to each their own. If no one makes an effort to buy new releases the prophecy will be self fulfilling.

Hey no negativity is intended, i would love to be able to order both and also captain america, unfortunately its just way out of my price range, even if i sold a few items,(as i have done, to raise the dosh the idea of selling lots of films to get only one back isn't too appealing, but all you wealthy chaps out there get ordering,
I look forward to the reviews so i can be jealous

Posted by Mark Silvester (Member # 929) on September 26, 2015, 12:45 PM:
Well said Mike.
It is such an interesting subject...but, and I hate to say it..any new releases in 8mm need "cash"...to produce and then hopefully through subsequent release, enough revenue to break even. I know that Phil Sheard has not just exhausted time and physical effort into keeping this hobby alive - BUT HIS own money also. He has taken quite a few "hits" as it were (cash wise having to absorb ventures)..and he is a smashing fellow and a friend of mine. So..hmm..well - as we all have different ideas as to what would make a good "release".....we need deep pockets and certainly collective agreement to support it, oh and obviously available material...then we get the copyright scenario. Like I said..interesting subject. Incidentally, I would love to have had a nice 2 x 400 (full reels please) of something like "Enter the Dragon". Now that would be a great release. What a great 40 minutes digest that would make - perfection.

It might be worthwhile mentioning: a few weeks ago I was given a mint, never screened print of "Once Upon a Time in the West" to conform sound on and -guess what? It was printed on poly AND it had both stripes!!!! So probably there is some novelty on this side but I haven't enquired with the lab yet. Andrew perhaps you can start buying new prints and , yes the sound quality was between good and very good.
Posted by Tom Photiou (Member # 130) on September 27, 2015, 04:05 AM:
I must admit i was very surprised some time ago when Phil asked who be interested in the Universal classic horror features and he told me he shelved it as not one person gave a definite order.
It must be difficult to decide what to release and what will sell, as Mark said, it all depends on what is available etc.
When you think that the last biggy release from Derann was Master & Commander,(& looking back i wish i had put myself down for that run of prints, i had the chance but had to pull out!! )
That was not a title i would have said would be popular but it was and i think i am right in saying they did sell there minimum required number of prints. I really would love the True Lies cut down but unfortunately its all about cash, oddly enough i just recently invested in the T610 Bauer, i could well have bought many films for what i paid for it, especially as i already have more than enough projectors.
This weekend i will be taking stock of some of our collection & machines and start thinning out. I have my Elf NT1 16mm all up and running as this is the first bunch to go. Its over 7 years since we watched any of our 16mm so what is the point of having it all sat around. Time to move on and either, invest in a few expensive 8mm movies or possibly look,(at last), into moving into digital projection along side of my 8.
Dare i cause a bit of controversy here, but i wonder if the next Bond feature to be released on super 8 was either a Daniel Craig or Timothy Dalton bond, would these titles be more popular, much more action etc?? I do know the chances of any of the material being available are zero on these particular Bonds.
Posted by Kevin Clark (Member # 211) on September 27, 2015, 04:17 AM:
Hello Tom
If you wanted later Bond movies on film surely your best bet would be to keep one of your 16mm machines as Moore / Dalton / Brosnan Bond features come up for sale fairly regularly on 16mm at below half the price of a newly struck Super 8 feature?
Kevin

Posted by Tom Photiou (Member # 130) on September 27, 2015, 07:10 AM:
Kevin, i didn't know that
I will have a re-think, i must admit to never checking any 16mm lists or sales purely due to thinking 8mm only, thanks for that tip. Wonder what else im missing
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 27, 2015, 07:18 AM:
Still not cheap though Tom by any means for top titles on LPP. Regularly see incredible titles for well over $1000 on 16mm despite never owning any.
I would never have the room for the films or the equipment. Also because of the noise I'd want a separate projection booth and preferably an actual dedicated home cinema room.
If I got a lottery win then definitely, otherwise it'll always be Super 8mm and digital for me.
I love em both for very different reasons.
Having waited until now Tom before getting into digital projection, I think you would be sensationally blown away by the magnificent image quality offered by even reasonably priced decent machines in this era now.

Lee,being a shift worker on annualized hours, means I have to be in work whenever scheduled to be there.
This in turn means in my particular case I can no longer have a season ticket and miss plenty of cine events etc etc.
It's just the way it is sadly for many many people nowadays. Your lives are part owned by our employers and for a lot of us, we just have to make the most from whatever time we are given or forced to be off. Often a rainy week mid February when nothing is particularly happening in either the cine or footballing world.
Gone are the days of 9 to 5 or Monday to Friday working week for all too many of us now sadly.
Posted by Maurizio Di Cintio (Member # 144) on September 27, 2015, 12:49 PM:
Andrew and Dominique, the print was not mine: I had to return it after dubbing it in Italian (it came with blank stripes).
As long as I know, the print was from the usual channel we all know of. I recall asking the German lab some time ago, about what the problem was to stripe both tracks on poly prints: the guy was not what I'd say "informative", but he said perhaps in the future they would be able to stripe both tracks. So probably the moment has just come... Perhaps I'll indulge in a brand new print on mylar of Capt. American, nice on a full 800' spool which I'll record in stereo (after all I already have the sound masters I made for a few Italian collectors )
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 27, 2015, 01:38 PM:
If you do purchase this Maurizio, please let us know what you think of the print quality and in particular the dual stripe quality. I do hope you are pleased with both once you receive it.
Posted by Maurizio Di Cintio (Member # 144) on September 27, 2015, 02:57 PM:
Andrew, I can tell you right now: so far I dubbed 3 prints of Capt. America, 2 on acetate and one on poly; I prefer the latter it looks "cleaner" and a little bit more saturated and contrasty (which I like), even if it's not very easy to tell, as I didn't have the chance to perform a side by side comparison. So based on memory, I'd rather go for the poly print.
As regards sound quality, there was only one track on the poly print of Capt America I worked on and its quality was on par with the best tracks I happened to record on. The tracks on the (much) more recent print of Once Upon a Time in the West were slightly different in color but well laid and smoothed; sound wise they performed really well: excellent maximum output, low distortion at momentary peak levels (+2 dB VU or more) very good dynamic range, low hiss noise and overall good frequency response. From the stand point of bias capability, these tracks do not pose any problems at all: old recordings are erased 100%, no perceivable traces thereof are left even if no new sound is added. Treble sound output is never shrill and unpleasant unless you record over level...
Of course at this point my considerations are worth something only if the lab is consistent in their quality, but I cannot see any reason why they shouldn't be. In any case IF and when I receive my possible print, I'll gladly share my views with you, guys.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on September 27, 2015, 04:11 PM:
Maurizio, those words you have spoken are extremely encouraging to someone like myself! Especially regarding the mono Polyester print which if I'm honest, I prefer 100 times more over acetate.
I could live with mono only single striped prints so long as I knew as an absolute certainty that the quality was consistently spot on given the importance of the pasted stripe when you only have one!!
I am extremely excited awaiting your future report regarding C.A.
If it is all good, I will begin ordering many new features again so long as the waiting time isn't excessive and I can definitely have them in Polyester.
Thank you for the update Maurizio.

CHC has just announced that True Lies is going to be available soon (but it seems that the first copies will be reserved for the pre orders). Altough, there is no mention of the price. Does anyone know this information (if you buy it from CHC as it is closer for me than The Reel Image) ?
Posted by Jason Schmidt (Member # 4526) on January 03, 2016, 06:03 PM:
It seems getting any info on most of these kinds of things is like pulling hens teeth - no wonder they have a hard time getting pre-orders. I sent Phil an email a month ago asking about new releases and was told "check out the website and december list". So on the December list from CHC I sent a note to purchase several items from the "Super 8 Releases" section only to be told they were sold out, fair enough, but the same items are still listed on the January list. I mean how hard is to keep the list somewhat up to date?

You are right Dom. We always used to get our names down early to secure a print of the first run from the negative in olden days.

When a title comes along that I would actually want to invest in, I'm glad that they will be printed on that new Kodak Vision poly film stock, as we (at GIOSI Films) had that one release printed on both Acetate and the Kodak Vision, and the Kodak Vision, in my opinion, was miles ahead of the old acetate stock.
I had bought reels 1 and 2 (in order to make a nice little digest) of ROTS, and while the sharpness was incredible, I was so danged annoyed at the acetate stock being so brittle, (It snapped on me while rewinding, and my rewinder isn't THAT harsh), and that yellowish-ness of the film stock really set me off, as they had to compensate for it, and while the color wasn't terrible, it did cheese me off (well, with how much you have to shell out, even for just two 600ft reels of a feature).
So, YAY! Kodak Vision poly stock!

I am honored to be one of the first collectors to add the new incredible "True Lies" digest to my collection. The editing is flawless, the image sharp, and the color is spot on... I had a slight problem with the "Captain America" release because the prints all had a blue-ish tint especially noticeable in the daylight scenes. That problem is gone with "True Lies" - no doubt because of the film stock used. I can't wait for the final reel comes out to splice it on the end adding up to a 45 minute digest. There are not too many prints being struck so call The Reel Image quick to get one... I know the price is a little steep... but we all should support the effort going in to putting out new Super 8 releases. It's worth it!

The price from The Reel Image is $259 and they will be shipped on Tuscan reels complete with case.

Hi! Just got mine and love it! I'm just wondering if it actually came with a case as I did not receive one.
