Hi I have a Pallas SoundMatic 707 super 8 projector and im wondering what will be a good sound set up?, it does have the two pin plug hole for an extension speaker, and an auxiliary plug because its possible to tape sound on magnetic strip, Thanks

Hi Jonathan,

Welcome!

A good sound system is like an engagement ring: you can spend as much as you want on it!

You can take it as far as you want (even if the people you live with say "too far"!)

For now, if you can find out if your machine needs a 4 Ohm speaker or an 8 ohm you can find a bigger speaker of that spec., wire it in and put it up by the screen.

-save the rest for another day!

Hi the projector can take a 8 ohm 6 watt extention speaker, I have the manual for the PALLAS SOUNDMATIC 707 ,but its in DUTCH , Thanks for your reply

8 Ohms is good! They as common as dirt and I'll give you odds you already have one (or two..).

The 6 Watts is a rating: in other words the projector puts out that much power, so the speaker needs to be able to handle that much at a minimum.

So if you find a speaker rated 6 Watts or higher you are good to go.

Does the external speaker jack look like this?

Steve, do you mean that I can use my 8 ohms speaker on a projector that has a 4 or a 6 ohms outpout (if that's the right word) but that I should not try a 4 ohms speaker (if I had one) on a projector with a 8 ohms "rate" ? Is that correct ?

That is all true.

When you use a speaker of higher impedance (Ohms) than the projector is rated for, all that happens is you can't get as much loudness. If you double the impedance, the volume drops to a half.

-but if you use a 4 Ohm speaker on an 8 Ohm machine, you may overheat the output stage of the amplifier and have a repair to make. If you can't find the parts you may just wind up with a very fancy silent projector!

The power rating of the speaker just means if you pour too much volume into that speaker, at the very least it will distort the sound and it may destroy the speaker too.

Thank you, Steve. I have a 6 ohms projector that I didn't dare to connect to my 8 ohms speaker. So next time I use it I will of course see how the sound is with an external speaker :-)

Should be fine.

All is means is you can only get 75% of the maximum possible volume.

-but how loud do you really want it to be anyway?

My Neighbors are very close as I live in flat. I almost always put the speaker close to me to avoid having to pu the volume too high, especially after 8 pm. The coming "Summer time" (we change the watches to have an extra "daylight" hour) will not help to project earlier. 75 % of the maximum available volume is even far away from what I will actually use :-)

I usually watch films after my wife has gone upstairs to watch TV.

Sometimes I ask her "Did you hear what I was showing?"

If she says "No." then I know I'm not overdoing it!

The exception is Fantasia.

-overdoing that isn't ever enough!

Same here Steve. I was discussing this very same aspect only a few weeks back and said at the time how important a factor a projector's running noise really is to me.

One because of my own enjoyment for the soundtrack, but more importantly to me in my circumstances, if the wife continually heard my machine whirring away while she was in bed upstairs, sometimes trying to sleep early because of an early get up for work next morning, then the game would very much be up for me for a second time around!

It's one of the main considerations as to why I value the machines that I do to the extent that I do, and also why machines like GS Xenon or 16mm projectors would be pointless in my house without a separate extension room and a booth.

Being a shift worker really helps to view tons of film, but it also means a lot of it I watch very very late on in the evenings or the early hours of the next day when the vast majority of people are in bed.

The acoustics of our place block the machine sounds between different rooms...do a number on human voices too!

"Can you bring me the pliers??"
"....Whaaaaattt??!"

I've thought of wearing headphones, but not being able to hear the projectors is just asking for trouble!

I feel the same about a real booth: all well and fine but somebody had better stay inside it.

What's interesting is my wife complained more about my sound back when I ran through internal speakers. I'm sure I'm pumping more volume now, but I think the same tracks skewed treble are just more irritating!

My son walks around with the volume turned up on his I-phone.

Here here! Ha ha ha.
Our 20year 0ld son cannot move anywhere around the house without having totally non noise cancelling ear plugs in his ears while also having an I pad or Mac glued to his hand where ever he steps foot! 😂😂

He requires constant entertainment!
Even takes it all in the bathroom with him on each and every occasion! I keep telling him the steam will ruin the electronics, but will he listen??

I can't decide which is worse: hearing his sound or having him use headphones and become effectively deaf!

There's just something wrong about having to make a phone call upstairs!
