Does anybody know what the threaded guide on the front of the machine is for? Instructions say nothing about it.

Any opinions welcome.

I believe that a synchronising unit plugs into the socket for controller a tape recorder.
It is a mechanical connection from the main drive shaft.

Thanks Maurice. I wonder if any of these controllers/syncronizers still exist?
Cheers,
Nick.

Which raises the question "Do tape recorders and reels of tape still exist?"

Indeed they do.
I believe most independent recording studios still use multi-track tape recorders to record and edit music takes. The domestic side has declined since CDs and memory sticks etc. but there is still a solid base of tape enthusiasts who collect "vintage" machines like myself and tapes are readily available on eBay.
Cheers,
Nick.
