I bought an old Craig editing station to use just for the rewinder. The right one has a major problem though. It is extremely stiff. It will move, but not without quite a bit of effort. Before I just spray the thing down with WD-40, I wanted to ask if anyone knew what the mechanism inside looked like. Specifically, am I going to damage anything by using some penetrating oil on it?

It's just a few gears inside. Open it up, clean the old grease off and re-grease it. It will run like new.

Hmm. I don't readily see an easy way to do that. I think there may be a c clip or retaining ring of some kind on the main axle which protrudes through the opposite side of the body. I don't have the tools to remove and then replace it, but it gives me a place to start, anyway.

You should be able to push it off with a flat screwdriver. Be careful not to damage it. You can get it started from the open side then gently pry it off from the the other side once you can get a small flat screwdriver between the ring and the shaft. I usually use pliers to slide or squeeze it back on.

John, I have a setup like this on a similar base that I've about killed and worn out from use. Guess I liked using it a lot! Not bad for $10. So good luck with this.

I added some cheap rubber feet to the corners from Home Depot, by the way.

Mine was $27 with shipping, but the small frosted glass projector mechanism works. I happened to have some electronics contact cleaner on hand, and I decided to give it a try first, since it's a little less messy than WD40, and evaporates quickly. I didn't expect it to do anything, but it's working great now.
