Working our way very slowly through our collection brings up some interesting things doesn't it? I never realised how many advert reels and trailers we had that are still stand alone.
Do you splice yours to feature films etc or do you leave them on there own spools? Due to there affordability i still find myself adding these to our collection. [Wink]

I love Ad and trailer reels Tom.

I do believe however, they are fairly pointless until a few at least are spliced together to make a long"ish" intro to the "Big Feature".

Whether or not you choose to add this combined trailer and advert reel to a feature or leave it as a separate stand alone item, on 200 or 400ft reels, to then be kept for using alongside many different feature presentations, is entirely down to an individual.

I've done both methods and both work really well Depending on set up of presentation etc etc.

We do have many joined at the start of feature, also we made up a very good 400ft presentation reel to start off any feature evening, it starts off with a trailer for Private Ryan, then Reflections UK, then a trailer for Titanic followed by reflections USA. Its a great reel on its own. [Wink]

I have never really been attracted to buying and showing cinema ads, but it seems that a lot of people in the UK like them as an element of a pre-show reel.
My own preshow reel is about 30 minutes of trailers, and a Pathe newsreel, all of which is preceded by 10 minutes of Wurlitzer organ music from the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

i think a lot of the advert reels,(we have 10), is,for, more of a nostalgia thing, i remember many of the adverts when i use to go pictures, especially the Zulu take off for silk cut cigarettes, its a classic advert along with many others, the quality of most of these reels are superb to. [Wink]

I also think that they are popular as they are 'A Place and Time' fixer, as we all watch adverts on a regular basis (whether we think we do or not), and as soon as you start watching an advert it brings back memories from the period the advert was made.

That is spot on Barry. Im guessing the ad reels derran released are all British ads so most of them would be unknown outside of the UK. Every time i watch these there are occassions where i can recall seeing it with past friends, even the the songs used in many of them instantly take you back to times both happy and sometimes a little sad. The power of advertising. [Wink]

I think the above points sum up part of the appeal, and some ads can certainly be 'works of art' in their own right and very repeatable. I'd agree that the Derann releases from around the mid 1980s have fantastic print and sound quality and bring back memories of when I'd enjoy seeing the very same ads in cinemas. They remind you that 8mm sound was never quite the same after the pre-stripe era.

I keep mine separate because I wouldn't want to be 'tied' to always screening the same ads before a particular feature, although it's effective to show ads (and trailers) from around the same period as a feature. I've sometimes weeded out and sold certain ads I didn't particularly like although I probably wouldn't do that now.

As with others here, I have "programme start" reels of adverts, trailers with daysets spliced between and a Look at Life or other interest film.

Whilst i do splice trailers to films i do keep my advert reels separate.
It's comical you know, just 15/20 years a go people would say,(with a sarcastic grin), "you buy advert reels and trailers? You pay money for that, what's the point?"
They just didn't get it, now when i talk in work about it people ask me,"when are we coming around to see some of your films and stuff?"
Too late, the mickey taking of the past,(video and DVD boys), that boat has gone, my collection is for the privileged few, and any charity shows or Birthdays/special occasions. [Wink]

Great topic!

I have changed the way I keep my trailers adverts different ways over the years. But now I try to keep the adverts back together on their original reels, as I find myself enjoying the whole reel as it was released.

With trailers, since most come single, or no more than three on a reel, I keep them on 400 foot reels, usually by category (sci-fi, etc.) and time period (70's, 80's, etc.). Of course I still occasionally put a combination of things together for particular showings.

James, thats more or less what i use to do, we still keep all our advert reels on there original spools, as you rightly say they are enjoyable on there own as well as at the start of a show. Many of our trailers are now on the start of films however, the downside is unless you watch the movie you dont see the trailer, in our case it's often a number of years. On my collection listing i have had to stock take them to remember which film has which trailer so i can know where they are. Obviously now everything is fully labelled We also make up full 200 or 400 ft spools with trailers as you do.

Incidentally, while on the subject of trailers, has anyone noticed on ebay how many trailers that were originally supplied by Derann on a 200 footer containing the full length and the teaser, are now being sold on a 50 ft spool, when you bid you end up with the teaser. It's caught me out once so now i say be aware of anyone selling trailers on a 50ft spool UNLESS its a full 50ft. Very crafty, they presumably sell off the short one and keep the main one [Mad]
