Q-tip and vinegar or CLR household cleaner OK to use? Isopropyl alcohol didn't work.

Should I not even bother because it's doesn't affect viewing?

The gate apertures appear to be brass which does not rust, but iron oxides can form.
Brass tarnish should be able to be removed with household cleaner such as dish-washing liquid.

Yes it looks like a Eumig interchangeable gate from a dual gauge projector, mine's like that too. I've never done anything to it, even Brasso :-)

I agree, it looks like the Eumig gate. Mine are the same. The brass does oxidise a little over time but it does not appear to be in actual contact with the film, so keeping it clean should be sufficient. I would not advise polishing it. Ken Finch.
