This is the first stop motion animation film I ever did, back in 1958 with a Bolex C8. It took 8 hours to shoot less than a 2 minute film.

I did something very similar my first summer in Super-8 when I was in high school (full disclosure: Paul's is nicer.)

The opening title was written in very light pencil and I filled in in with felt-tip marker a frame at a time. Being a teenager I started filming about midnight. Dad worked nights and showed up about 3AM: "What are you doing?!". He was a 35mm Slide guy: once I explained it to him he was impressed!

My best friend was on crutches that summer (-a bike thing). I had him step one crack forward on the sidewalk and stand straight. I did the same with the camera on the tripod and snapped a frame. On screen he was moving something close to 30 MPH.

-what's sad is after I got married it got lost in the move between my parents' house and ours. I haven't seen it in easily 25 years.

(You don't have to be a great filmmaker to have a lost film!)

Steve, there was a guy in Canada by the name of Norman McLaren who literally scratched animation, frame by frame, directly onto black 35mm film with a pointed needle.
Thanks everybody for the nice comments on my little film, which was made when I was still in High school. And in response to Greg's comment, the film is as good today as the day it was shot.
I doubt very much that the digital copy will last anywhere that long.

So incredibly charming! I wish i still had a few of the stop motion things I did years ago, but they have become lost over time. Thanks for sharing.
