I recently won a digest on Ebay and I knew going in that it had black scratches throughout. Cleaned the print with FilmRenew, but the scratches are still there. I want to make clear that I have not lost faith in Larry's FilmRenew. I was curious if black scratches are also emulsion scratches like the green ones? I thought black scratches were just evidence of a dirty print. I did have some brown mag stripe residue on the cloth strips I was using, but Larry assured me it was normal and just mag stripe dust. He was right - the sound is fine. Very bassy like many Columbia 40's titles are, but the narrator came through crystal clear - figures, right?

I have a bottle of "film cleaner" and it has never helped for scratches of any kind, despite what I have read elsewhere.

All i can say in response is, for black base side scratches, i haven't found any yet that i cannot make appear completely invisible while projecting by using FG.
Obviously there isnt a cleaner made that can do anything to help out with emulsion side scratches and of course, there never could be.
