So I just got the Revue Film three-parter of Das Boot.
I was watching reel three last night and all of a sudden the action got a little hectic. The guys were running all over the place and speaking fast enough to be from New York!
Granted, they were aboard a damaged submarine marooned on the sea floor with sea water gushing in seemingly everywhere: they certainly had every right to be agitated, but I don't remember it happening that way on the Blu-Ray. Later on in the same reel it settled down to normal.
-In the meantime they were pretty energetic for a bunch of guys who were running low on oxygen!
This is where Murphy's Law kicks in: I was watching on a machine with a DC motor, so it could have been my motor speed regulator going off the rails. Afterwards I tried another reel and unfortunately picked a film with a narrator who had an unusually high pitched male voice (-What can go wrong, will go wrong...), so I am still status inconclusive about whether it's the machine or the film. (18 FPS works, so there is at least some control left.)
-anybody out there have this print? Is it conceivable that Revue sped the action up to get it all on that very full reel?
