Hello,
Does anyone know much about this release? I just got it in a job lot of super 8 digests, but do not have a projector. There is little info online, I am guessing the film is dubbed in Italian? It looks complete, I did hold it up to the light to check the heads and tails. Any idea of its worth? The box it came in is large and not in the best shape. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Ed,

It seems you've found an Italian language print of "2001, A Space Odyssey" (Nice!)

Condition is everything: if it's in great shape it could be quite valuable, if it's faded to pink or very scratched it could be worthless.

If it's magnetic sound it could be re-recorded into many languages. If it's optical sound it's basically just for collectors who speak Italian. (Look for a clear section of film and check for dark stripes on at least one edge for magnetic sound.)

How many reels? How big are they?

Hi,
if the film is in its original box with artwork, then you may have only one of the two part of the film (the Italian version of the film was released in 8x600ft spools, collected in two boxes, but the film is also cut respect to the cinematographic version). If you have it in bigger spools, maybe the have been joined together.

The film will be almost certainly red or reddish and, for sure, it has the scope cut at the edges (as many Italian bootleg prints).

I've never had the print but, according to some Italian collectors it's almost unwatchable...

From a collector's point of view its value is really low

The original film is in 8x400.In Italy and Spain they often used 600 ft reels, but filled with only 400 feet of film. Prints may be bad but the boxes are usually of very sturdy carton or plastic, with separated spaces for each reel or even, each reel in a separate plastic box, with its own artwork, and all boxes in the big sturdy case, with artwork.

Yeah, I guess we were more clever with artwork than with its content.... [Mad]

Among other things, it should be a pirate version. That would not, in itself, be a problem, I saw pirate Super 8 film with good audio and image. But this version is not well...

However, by surfing around the web, you can find note about a German version, but with Italian audio, by Animex. That is in higher quality, but more more rare.

The film, as mentioned, may also have been rewound in 4 larger reels.

Thank you everyone for the replies! So upon closer inspection, it does appear to be reel #5,6,7 and 8, so the later half of the film.
Sadly I do not have a projector, but holding it up to light, its looks ok, not too red or faded.
Looks like it was distributed by CIC. On the spine is a gold logo of 2 doves with the letters WYX.
I was hoping to sell it on eBay as a curio, but no idea what I'd even list for opening bid. $1? Many thanks again everyone!
