Why would vendors like KEN and COLUMBIA PICTURES release certain titles in mute subtitled versions only? Titles like “Return of the Vampire”, for example. Why would they not want to increase their market shares?

I am not sure, but it could have been for contractual reasons. The similar happened with Disney with their first release of Mickey Mouse cartoons which were then only issued as silent versions.
