I have successfully replaced the 2 arm drive gears which came from Edwin van eck. I can recommend these 3D printed gears to anyone with a GS 1200.

I still have an issue with the sound on this machine and need help to proceed.

When playing normal mono track movies, the sound output is fine.
All the way up to loud.
However, when the volume control for track 2 is turned up just a bit, it emits a terrible, loud screeching sound from the speakers and the recording meter for track 2 slams to full stop during this screeching.
I dont think it is working in stereo as this screech reappears whenever track 2 volume is turned up at all. It is real loud.

So I am uncertain what can be causing this problem with the sound. The machine is a late model and in good shape otherwise.

Hoping some one can suggest a course of action, as I want this noise fixed before my hearing is affected.

Is the white record switch turned to the off position?

Yes Chip
that record switch has no effect on the noise. I have worked it many times.

The only thing that seems too affect the noise is the volume control for track 2.
When it is turned right down then there is no more noise heard.

Sound like you have a short somewhere [Frown] frank this is all guess work, but have you looked carefully around the sound head wiring? and follow it through to the pre-amp. I have no idea but is there a connector on the circuit board where the wiring from the sound head goes? last I can think of is to give all the switches ESS etc a workout....best of luck

Frank, try this take your finger and press down on the record button on the affected side! Turn the record button on! And press down a few times! To see if the noise stops! You see there's a micro switch that works it! They do go bad! If that does not work than its needs cleaning or the micro switch is bad!

Hi Graham and Leon and Chip...

Despite working the record switches and buttons earlier on without any success, I decided to try yet again and do exactly as Leon advised. Pressing and sliding the record button and changing tracks. Plus working any other switch and button on the machine.

Nothing seemed to change for a while. I just continued flipping the record switch and track keys until suddenly I realised I could turn up the volume on track 2 without any screeching noise erupting.
Further testing with 2 track sound films confirmed that track 2 was working again at full strength and clear as a bell.

So I am delighted to report that this Elmo GS 1200 is working properly again. Magnificent, clear loud sound in Stereo.

The 2 new 3D printed arm-drive gears from Edwin Van Eck are working fine with no problems at all in the fitting.

This is now a happy day for me and what a fast result by the very experienced resident forum experts. Thanks to Leon, Chip and Graham for your help and excellent advice.

Thanks a lot for this thread. A sound problem occured on my gs (bad luck after I had been, again thanks to Leon's advises, able to fix the sharpness). I tried what was described here and it worked !
