Hi I need to edit a bunch of STD 8 footage. Can anyone recommend a make/brand of an viewer? There are plenty to chose from on ebay. I did own a ELMO years ago but found the brightness lacking. Are motorised units available?

Most of the viewer/editors I have come across use a 6volt 10watt Small bayonet cap. and the film image is projected via a mirror on the rear of a translucent screen hence a lot of light loss. The bigger the screen, the duller the image. Motorised versions were mainly used by professional editors for 16 and 35mm. Ken Finch

Also, it’s worth checking that is a proper viewer bulb, not a cheaper type used in motorcycle sidelights. These work ok, but the filament is a different type, so it looks very dull in most viewers.
Also, even with the correct bulb, minute adjustments to the line up when you insert the bulb and lock it can make a big difference to the brightness on screen.
