Michael - As Winbert says, it is a matter of opinion. I personally swear by them. Sankyo have served me well for the last 40 years. Although I don't own a 500, I have several 700's, a 702 and an 800. They are also very kind to films as long as you keep the path clean. Incidentally, the Bell and Howell range that start with the prefix DC are just a Sankyo by a different name and do the job just as well.
I agree with Winbert re Elmo. I like them and, of course, the GS1200 is considered one of the best ever.
The only make I am not fond of, and this may open a can of worms as many here adore them, is Eumig. Any I have used just felt as if they underperformed. Plastic gate, weak contact with sound heads.
….. right.... let me head straight into my bunker !
