Thanks Kev, it doesn't say stereo on the box, but even the mono sounds great, and yes... a very sharp, well edited print. [Smile]

Mine has got a silver stereo sticker on the box so suspect your copy will also be in stereo. Dont think that Derann would bother to release the two versions.

Dear Kevin,

I'm afraid your wrong their Kevin, as they sold many of there earlier releases like "Never Ending Story" & "Gremlins" just to name 2 as either in Mono or for a slightly extra cost in Stereo. They did this for a while and then realised that they might just as well just record Stereo if they had a Stereo master, as it meant all the work of getting the prints and the mag master into sync had to be done twice, once on the Mono recorder and then again on the Stereo recorder, and in those days when Derek was recording 100's of prints a week, this was extra work.

Hmm, would have been interesting if they had ever done stereo prints that are also mono-compatible... i.e. record a mono signal on track 1 and the difference between stereo channels on track 2, then use a simple decoder to combine tracks 1 and 2 (on 2-track capable projectors) into a stereo signal. Advantage being that even if you played only track 1 you wouldn't be missing any audio information. But that's just me thinking technically again (applying the principles of middle/side encoding on MP3 files to analogue recording) [Smile]

Yeap, Availible in stereo or mon and if you purchased it in mono second hand Derran could re-record it in stereo for a small fee. I to have the mono print and it would have been a tenner for re-record so as i was happy with the sound anyway i didnt bother [Wink]

Well guys, that was news to me. I didnt realise that Derann offered both versions. That must have been during the days that I had left the super 8mm format in favour of 16mm.
I have to say that the Stereo sound on my Copy is really excellent with a very good level on both tracks with good fidelity. Certainly better than some of the recent releases.

Dear Kevin,

This is an odd coincidence, as I have just imported the R4 DVD of "The Neverending Story" from Australia (it's not available in the U.K., strange isn't it!), and as Australia is PAL the same as the U.K., if anyone wanted to re-record it using a pulse sync system, this will have the PAL pulse on it, and if I remeber right, the 600' was cut episodically, so it should be quite easy to re-record from the DVD. The price is exceptional too, I paid about £7 inc post from Australia, and it's a bloody good transfer, and re-mastered into DD5.1 too! If any member wants the details of where to get this DVD, then email me.

Barry, the internet certainly makes this world a smaller place. Sounds like a great DVD.

I remember having this 600ft extract years ago, but I honestly was not impressed with the stereo sound, but judging by the more recent Derann stereo prints, thier technology has really improved.

Well, besides people adding stereo sundtracks at home, what other film suppliers have stereo capability? I nce had a print, (back in 90) of Star Wars scope stereo, and I noticed that the balance track (left channel, I think,) was rather fuzzy. I thought about changing my mono copy of Star Wars over with a Laserdisc stereo sundtrack, but I'm afraid I'll screw it up!
