"Sons of the Desert" lodge convention, Ollie pretends to be sick, and
gets a doctor (who turns out to be a veterinarian) to prescribe a long
ocean voyage to Hawaii. Decked out in leis and strumming ukuleles,
they return home only to learn that the ship supposedly carrying them
has sunk. Their hastily- contrived tale of "ship-hiking" their way back
cuts no ice with their wives, who've been at the movies watching a
newsreel of the lodge's convention parade, starring... guess who? -
4x400ft b/w snd £59

feet in cement, about to be dumped into the harbour - 3x400ft b/w snd
£59
45666 JAILBIRDS - Laurel & Hardy, June Marlowe, Wilfred Lucus -
It's Prohibition, and the boys wind up behind bars after Stan sells some
of their home-brew beer to a policeman. In prison, Stan's loose tooth
keeps getting him in trouble, because it sounds like he's giving
everybody a rasp- berry. But it earns him the respect of The Tiger, a
rough prisoner, and the boys manage to slip away during The Tiger's
escape attempt. They disguise themselves in blackfaces and hide on a
cotton plantation, but are recaptured when the warden happens by.
Back in the big house, they find themselves in a hail of bullets, caught
between the state militia and gun-toting prisoners, when The Tiger tries
another escape - 3x400ft b/w snd £59
45667 THEY GO BOOM - Laurel & Hardy - Stanley's attempts to
treat Oliver's cold include dropping a swab down his friend's throat,
applying a mustard plaster to his rump, and inflating the air mattress
from the gas jet until it has Oliver pressed against the ceiling - 400ft b/w

45668 THE GHOST TRAIN - FEATURE - Arthur Askey, Richard
Murdoch, Kathleen Harrison, Carole Lynne - Mismatched travellers
are stranded overnight at a lonely rural railway station. They soon
learn of local superstition about a phantom train which is said to travel
these parts at dead of night, carrying ghosts from a long-ago train
wreck in the area. The travellers eventually get to the bottom of the
things that go bump in the night. In between the scary bits, comedian
Arthur Askey plays the gags with his Vaudeville style humour, to the
constant irritation of his fellow passengers - 4x400ft b/w snd £69
45669 - OLD MOTHER RILEY'S HEAD MISTRESS - FEATURE -
Arthur Lucan, Kitty McShane, Joy Adams, Enid Hewitt, Willer Neal -
The Old Mother Riley series was certainly an interesting concept.
Heterosexual British males really relish dressing up in drag (Dame
Edith, Monty Python, Benny Hill, etc.), and this series may well have
started more modern comedians on their way. Unfortunately, the films
have suffered in quality over the years, and are faded or spotty. Some
that I have viewed have such poor sound quality that I lost a goodly
portion of the jokes as well as the plot! "Headmistress" has survived
somewhat better, probably because it was towards the end of the series,
but Lucan's physical comedy has become automatic and predictable in
this one. Still, if you are a lover of Brit humour, as I am, you'll find this
a pleasant pastime - 4x400ft b/w snd £59
45670 BLOCK-HEADS - Laurel & Hardy, Patricia Ellis, Billy Gilbert -
It's 1938, but Stan doesn't know the war is over; he's still patrolling the
trenches in France, and shoots down a French aviator. Oliver sees his
old chum's picture in the paper and goes to visit Stan at the Soldier's
Home. Thinking Stan is disabled (it's just that he's sitting on his leg),
Oliver takes pity on him and takes him home for a nice home-cooked
meal. But Oliver's wife has other ideas and leaves him to fend for
himself. After blowing up the kitchen, Oliver is helped by his next-door
neighbour, Mrs. Gilbert... until the big-game hunting Mr. Gilbert
comes home unexpectedly, carrying a shotgun - 3x400ft b/w snd £59
45671 OLD MOTHER RILEY MEETS THE VAMPIRE - FEATURE -
Arthur Lucan, Bella Lugosi, Dora Bryan, Graham Moffatt, Philip
Leaver - While the Mother Riley series (with star Arthur Lucan in drag
as an old woman) was rarely outrageously funny, some films in the
series nevertheless do manage to amuse and keep an audience's interest.
This is one such film. The best bits here involve Bela Lugosi as a
vampire who actually behaves more like a mad scientist and the Robot
under his command who chases after poor old Mrs. Riley. More a spoof
on old British Scotland Yard films than anything else really. Not bad of
its type - 4x400ft b/w snd £59
45672 GREEN FOR DANGER - FEATURE - Sally Grey, Trevor
Howard, Alastair Sim, Rosamund John - In a rural English hospital
during WW2, a postman dies on the operating table and the nurse
states she knows the murderer is dead too. The facetious Inspector
Cockrill suspects one of the five doctors and nurses who were in the
operating theatre to be the assassin. But four poisonous pills have
disappeared - 5x400ft b/w snd £79
45673 NOTHING BUT TROUBLE - FEATURE - Laurel & Hardy,
Mary Boland, Philp Merivale - Working as chef and butler, the boys
wreck a fancy dinner party and, in the process, accidentally foil a plot,
by enemy agents, to poison a young exiled king - 4x400ft b/w snd £69
45674 DODGE CITY - FEATURE - Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland,
Ann Sheridan, Bruce Cabot, Alan Hale, Henry Travers - Dodge City a
wide-open cattle town run by Jeff Surrett. Even going on a children's
Sunday outing is not a safe thing to do. What the place needs is a
fearless honest Marshal. A guy like Wade Hatton, who helped bring the
railroad in. It may not help that he fancies Abbie Irving, who won't
have anything to do with him since he had to shoot her brother. But
that's the West - 4x600ft col snd £129
45675 THE GLASS MOUNTAIN - FEATURE - Michael Denison,
Dulcie Gray, Valentina Cortese, Sebastian Shaw, Tito Gobbi - In the
Italian Dolomites a British composer (Michael Denison) loves an Italian
girl (Valentina Cortese) who had saved his life during the war. This
finely-cast soap opera, which also features the great Italian baritone
Tito Gobbi, was an enormous British success. A great deal of it has to
do with its wonderful music including an invented opera by the great
film-composer Nino Rota, who provided scores for Fellini's best films.
Much of the film was shot on location in the Dolomites and at Venice's
La Fenice Opera House, destroyed in recent years by a tragic fire. This
is a film that is very much worth re-discovering - 5x400ft b/w snd £69
45676 BEAU HUNKS - Laurel & Hardy, James W Horne, Charles
Middleton - Jilted by his girlfriend, "Jeanie-Weenie," Oliver joins the
Foreign Legion to forget, bringing Stanley along with him. They wilt
under the scorching desert sun and under the harsh discipline of the
Commandant. On a long march to reinforce remote Fort Arid, the boys
get lost in the sands, finally reaching the Fort only to find it besieged by
the fearsome Riffs - 2x400ft b/w snd £25
45677 OLD MOTHER RILEY'S NEW VENTURE - FEATURE -
Arthur Lucan, Kitty McShane, Grace Arnold, Wilfred Babbage, Fred
Groves - Mr Grigsby is the workaholic owner and operator of a posh
hotel. He hasn't had a holiday in years, because he can't trust anyone to
run the hotel in his absence. Then he suddenly decides to take a holiday
after all, and (get this) he decides to hand over his authority to the very
next person who walks through his door. So of course that person is Old

meet along the way, even though "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend."

45683 THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE - Humphrey
Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt, Bruce Bennett - Dobbs and Curtin

who takes them away to remote site and tells them they will be paid
when the job is finished. When they are finished, they return to town to
find McCormick to get their wages. McCormick gives them a few
dollars, and says he'll just go to the bank and pick up the payroll for
them. Dobbs and Curtin then meet up with an old prospector, who
claims the hills are still full of gold, and if they can get the cash, he'll go
with them. They eventually get the cash from McCormick after a little
"persuasion", and all three set off for the hills as good friends, but will
they return that way? - 2x400ft squeezed onto a 600ft reel and box £20
