I have this film too and it's very good. Don Bluth, having left the Disney studio (creative differences) made this they're first animated feature, and it was a welcome return to the classical look of Disney style animation, (which Disney was slowly but surely turning away from.
In fact, a few articles I have read by the top Disney animators at the time have credited Don BLuth with getting Disney back on track because, suddenly, here was an ex-Disney employee not only making better looking (if not better storylines) films and in fact, with "An American Tale" becoming the number 1# highest grossing animated film of all time (I bet in adjusted dollars however, Snow White was still the afirest of them all) ...
... and that just wouldn't do for Disney (and Bluth stuck it in they're faces again with "The Land Before Time"). They then revamped they're studio on the in the mid to late 80's and came out with "Little Mermaid" and thus began Disney's second golden age.
Sorry about the longwindedness folks!
