Here goes, has any-one got a four reel copy of 'The Fabulous Dorseys'?, I need the sound for reel 2 & 4, if some-one can record the sound and convert to MP3 or any other file, in order for me to re-record the soundtrack. The 4 reeler is an edited version of the film, so the the dvd involves a-lot of re-editing, which I have started but is very difficult. I got this film because I like big bands...Fingers crossed...

It's not a film I have unfortunately Steve, or else I would gladly assist you with this.

It's the type of film someone like Paul Adsett would have I would have thought, he loves Big Band music from what I have read on here from Paul.

Whether or not he has either the time or facilities to help you out is a different issue, but I would be surprised if this title is one he didn't have.

Worse case scenario, so long as you have the DVD of the film, I could crop it digitally to match the scenes but I would need to see the two mute reels while doing so to be able to match it all correctly.

This type of sound transfer is far easier using full "frame perfect" feature films it goes without saying!

We really could do with a digital soundtrack library on here gathered by people who do this sort of stuff so as to save time and duplication of other peoples efforts with these things.
Trouble is, it would need one very large storage cloud!

All done, I found a copy of the film on DVD and edited to fit the two mute reels using Power Director. I found that when recording from my PC there was a ground loop causing hum etc, so I got a ground loop isolator which took care of that. I found the track drifted out of sync, so I recorded in sections so the part I already recorded would not get erased when cueing I turned the sound mix/ sound on sound control hard to the left so the track remained and as the new part came in I turned it hard right recording fresh track, this was a long job some parts are very good and in perfect sync, some just a tad out but not that noticeable.So from a film that was useless I have one that I have now watched and very much enjoyed. I might add the new sound track is much better than the other two reels with the 'factory' track those pre-recorded tracks are over level recorded and a bit distorted, and very low end. All this was done with one ear and a covered headphone over my aid, so not a bad couple of days recording...

Re recordings always turn out far superior to the originals when done on a decent stripe.

You can always revisit the sections that are a tad out in your leisure if you decide to ever perfect your work. But very well done indeed, this work takes a lot of patience and dedication, especially when not a complete feature!

Yes I will Andrew, I think next time I will video the film mute, then place that in power producer, then sync the track from the DVD to that mute video, it will be easier to follow the frame exact, then with that complete the dub should be more manageable,(I hope) more like the exact reel,in time and speed, because their fade-outs etc, on the reel are nothing like the DVD version...

Thanks Steve, certainly a versatile program, and some good transitions throughout your uploads. What a pity the Italian job was never on super 8, would have been popular amongst collectors I think.
