Ahh, such a great action film.

I'm certainly tempted and the quality looks pretty good despite the pretty scant description. However, and I'm waffling here, it's one of those films I just couldn't see myself watching with the family for a good few years due to the horror aspect and I'll be damned if I'm going to watch it alone after they've gone to bed [Smile]

The only R rated exception that I can think of is probably Die Hard, which I couldn't see going for $499.

... Though personally, if just too blue, having had a lifelong affinity to the colour, I could live with that if that was the only issue here!

I cannot see any point in only accepting bids that must, in this case, be so very close to the BIN price???

May as well have just listed it as a BIN object.

No doubt the print will now be offered to the guy who is willing to pay $408 dollars for it.

It strikes me, the seller was simply testing the water here to see what anyone was willing to pay for the print without actually expecting it to be sold via e bay directly here.

Canny eh?

Probably hardly any difference if you omit any commission other than Paypal!

Because this way, you get to see what people are willing to pay for your goods rather than if no one will meet your over inflated unrealistic starting price Tom.

Simple as that.

Then very often, the seller will offer the print at the end, when it doesn't sell, for this slightly less amount, once they've received a reality check!

I noted the 'bluish' quality as well. There are some outstanding color prints of this out there, though ... I'd wait for that one ...

I have seen screenshots of better color. There was a comparison done on this very forum some years back, between a bluish LPP print and either an Agfa or good LPP version. If someone could be so kind as to locate it?

True but every Aliens print I've ever seen has a blue tinge.

Some of Derann other releases can be had on two different stocks but I don't believe this is one of them.

I have one of the prints that has a more natural color and you can tell especially in the face shots with Ripley and Paul Reiser in the first few scenes. I have seen some of the blue prints as well.

I had 2 copies of Aliens at one time. I kept the warmer looking print but the other one was definitely on the bluer side.

So far, i've never seen one as good though, they all tend to look like the more expensive one featured there, a little blue as often can be the case with the later Derann stuff.

Adrian here, as ever, makes some superb observations here regarding all of this;

Irrespective of whether the pics of the $500 print are fully representative of the look of the actual copy, they look so offputting that the seller is extremely lucky to get the amount he wanted. I think that prints with that excessively bluish look are probably more common from around the late 1990s onwards, as the lab seemed to become more inconsistent. I got my 'Aliens' within about a year of it being released and I'd say the colour is a bit 'cool' but it's a great print. However, I recall seeing another one soon afterwards that was too 'warm' for my liking, so even around 1988 there could be big variations between batches.

With regard to Winbert's question: "How many Derann titles you know that have so many obvious diversity on print quality?", I think the question should be: "Do you know of Derann titles where there's evidence that there's very little diversity in quality?" I suspect that diversity tends to be the norm, apart from perhaps cases where the negative quickly become damaged and there were only one or two batches of prints. I know that Disney placed great emphasis on quality control, so it could be that the lab was leaned upon to achieve greater consistencey with these.

There is no doubt in my mind that it was the Disney prints that Derann released that gave the very best consistency of colour rendition from one batch of prints to another.

I definitely agree with you on that Andrew, excpet for the one exception of Fantasia 2000, (I think all of the prints of that were fairly bluish, which didn't help in that the film itself had a slightly bluish color to begin with) ...

In that, I was truly astounded as to just HOW GOOD a susper 8 print, made from excellent source material, could look. The Derann Disney's were truly as good as a good 16MM print, and that is my personal opinion.

Hey, that is the comparison that i was talking about, thanks for posting that. The two prints, side by side, are like night and day, to be sure.

I know that colour print paper always had a batch code that you needed to know its colour balance and add or subtract it from your filter settings when printing. I wonder if for print film this was later not included, set for a bluer tone, or that the labs didn't use it as well as they did earlier, I know some prints had hundreds of corrections on the grading tape.
