Anyone looking to have a variable speed control for the Elmo SC-18, can purchase the conversion kit at the link below ... This is not just a lamp dimmer cut into the motor circuit.

I suspect, Jon , that your conversion is just as applicable to other machines in the wide range of Elmos that use a motor control board with speed presets, although the value for the potentiometer required may vary dependant on whether the board is "pre-IC" or not.
