UFA 2x400' Super 8mm magnetic sound/Color 34 minutes THE UFA BOX ART (I had to remove them from the clamshell vinyl cases to get decent photos) The original title of this Spanish language 1970 film is La Noche de Walpurgis. It stars horror icon Paul Naschy and was directed by Leon Klimovsky. It contains brief nudity and a good amount of gore for a 1970 film. It is also known as Shadow of the Werewolf and also as The Werewolf vs. The Vampire Woman. UFA in Germany released this super 8 version in two parts as NACHT DER VAMPIRE and DIE ORGIE DES HORRORS. The digest is in the letterboxed format, and my print is on a low fade film stock. I spliced both parts together to make a nice 34 minute 800 footer. I had the German audio re-recorded to English by Adam Deierling. The UFA digest begins with the wolf man Waldemar Daninsky (Paul Naschy) being brought back to life when a doctor removes two silver bullets from his heart during an autopsy. After killing both men the werewolf attacks and kills a woman in the woods, then a quick main title. Elvira and Genevieve (Gaby Fuchs and Barbara Capell) search for the tomb of vampire/witch Wandesa Dárvula de Nadasdy (Patty Shepard). They meet and are helped by Waldemar, who lives with his sister Elizabeth (Yelena Samarina). They find the tomb and while removing a silver dagger from the skeleton, the blood from an accidental cut brings the vampire Countess back to life. Genevieve is then brought under her spell and becomes a vampire. Waldemar's sister is also a victim, he later drives a stake in her heart, beheads, and buries her body. Meanwhile Waldemar's handyman Pierre (Jose Marco) and Elvira are confronted by the two vampires. Genevieve is later killed when Waldemar pushes her onto a stake in the cemetery. The full moon rises and Waldemar transforms into the werewolf. He then kills a traveler camping in the woods and the next day he explains his plight to Elvira and asks her to chain him until morning. Elvira is then assaulted by Pierre, but Waldemar, now the werewolf, breaks the chains and kills him. Meanwhile Elvira's police inspector boyfriend Marcel (Andres Resino) tracks her to Waldemar's house from a bar in the village. The two later attempt to drive away, but are trapped and chained by the Countess. The moon rises and the werewolf and vampire finally fight and the Countess is destroyed. Elvira then grabs the silver dagger and plunges it into the werewolf, who transforms back into Waldemar. The chains disappear and Elvira and Marcel walk away… A few versions of this film were also released on super 8 by Walton Films, but only in black & white...
