Just been checking one title from the newly acquired collection. It's a film from the 50s which contains many diagonal cement splices (all in perfect condition.)

I always thought diagonal splicing was used for magnetic film joining, I can't see any advantage is using it for optical/picture prints as some parts of each frame are present. It may be because there is no overlap on the perforation, but this is only a guess.

Hello Maurice!

Bell & Howell was an early supporter of the diagonal splice for the 'Home Movie' enthusiasts.

Here is the copy from a March 1932 ad for their splicers. I think it's the best description about the diagonal splice.

I've never made any diagonal splices when splicing film with frames. I did splice magnetic tracks with a diagonal splicer, however.
