I've just subscribed to "The Big Reel", I saw it a few years back, and I was wondering what it's like these days, perhaps anyone who has it can give me some information, it used to be very interesting, has it changed much?

It's much thinner and just this month announced that it will be published only every other month...not monthly...so it's value as a buy/sell vehicle will likely be further diminished. I still find worthwhile films to buy in there, but with bi monthly...who knows.

It is thin, and down to 60 pages.

The November-December issue will
begin to publish the paper on
a 'semi-monthly' every other
month schedule.

There will be more coverage of
DVD's, memorabilia and other
facets of film collecting.

Claire Fliess and Lenore Howard
have passed their duties onto
Wayne Youngblood who is in charge
with the title of Editorial Director, Pop Culture.

Mr.Youngblood asks if there are any questions,
concerns or comments to please address them
to:
Wayne L. Youngblood, Editorial Director,
Pop Culture Division,
F+W Publications,
700 E. State St.,
Iola WI 54990-0001
or
wayne.youngblood@fwpubs.com

The paper is filled with articles
and some scant film adverts, but
one of the few full page
16mm dealers as T.J. Shaffran
had stopped advertising a few
months ago.

J.G. Nelson was featured
in a special obituary in
the current issue.

Fellow dealer/collector
Henry Ottinger, wrote a very
interesting bio, about his
love of films. Especially
stating that if a film was
'beet red,' Jerry would always
defend it in description as:
'oh, it's just a little pink.'
Jerry loved film so much, that
he was sad to know that film
was not thriving as
it had several years ago.
However, he stayed tried
and true as a film hobbyist and
dealer, exclaiming that film was
superior and surpassed video in
quality.

Jerry had to sell his films
due to his failing health after
a heart attack. He cherished the
film business.

Nelson's family is welcoming the
public to share interesting stories
with them about Jerry.
Please send them to:
Ted and Connie Zasada,
910 Magnor Lake Lane
Clayton, WI 54004
USA

I have not seen The Big Reel in recent years but back in the 1980's I subscribed and it was packed with film, dozens of 16mm dealers; 8mm and 35mm too. There was always rare gems and stacks of TV shows. I bought several of my favourite features for only $60 each with really good colour. The cartoons available were plentiful too.

Collecting film is still alive and well it has just moved onto the internet. Here in Australia we have a mini version of The Big Reel called Reel Deals. Only $15.00 per year and full page ads are free! I buy/sell film or equipment from it all the time. If you want to subscribe just search and you'll find it.

David,

Indeed, the Big Reel
is a pale comparison to
what it was in the 1980's
This is the first time
I've heard of Reel Deals.
It sounds neat.

Stay warm, it's
winter down there.
Any chance of the
temperature going up?

BIG REEL used to be a newspaper-style format which heralded alot of information and articles, nit to mention a plethora of film ads both wanted and to-buy - Jerry was a nice man, I'll miss him - Henry O., I bought some nice 8mm from and he's a great seller - MOVIE COLLECTOR'S WORLD used to also have alot of film, now it's mod-tech - I've done well and still do with BIG REEL - And hello Michael, please pray and stay in touch - Shorty
