Hi Gang...I'm the other new member.
I have only been monitoring the posts here for a few weeks and thanks to the forum, I just won on a Eumig 824 on EBay, which I needed for my film transfer business. I am probably one of the oldest members of the group, as in the 1950's, I was fascinated with my father's 'toy' 16mm Keystone silent projector. In the summer, while he was at work, I used to secretly set it up and watch the dozen or so cartoons he had...over and over again. My dream as a child was to somehow make the films 'talk'.
Those were the days when for 21 cents (US) on Saturdays I would see three features (mostly B movies), ten cartoons, and two serial chapters, ala Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, etc..
When I got older I would shoot standard 8mm with my father's Kodak Brownie and eventually moved up to the Bolex P4, then to an H8. By the time Super 8 was introduced, my investment kept me in the standard 8 arena until Video was introduced. I shot thousands of feet of home movies.
I was a hardware technician for IBM for nine years, giving me the background I need to fix up old projectors.
Although I am not an avid collector as some of you are, I often bid on films, both Super 8 and 16mm.
I have been stiking out on finding the projectors I might need, so stumbling on the forum was a Godsend.
I hope that, with my studio experience (both video and audio), I might be able to help any members in any way that I can. Sorry, no photo, as my digital camera has bitten the dust.

Hello and welcome to the Forum, Carlos. I assume the Eumig you won is the one that Alan Rik was auctioning off. Congratulations! I hope there's plenty of film just waiting to be transferred out there!

That's the very one, Doug. With the prospect of a projector with good sound, perhaps I can spend less time doctoring up soundtracks in the DAW. The transfer portion of the business came almost by accident in that I got one request, then by word of mouth, I got many more. Although I am a videographer, I still love the depth of film, and try to get my videos to look like film. Too bad that many prints are turning pink as they age, otherwise I would own more films than DVDs.

Welcome and congratulations on the projector. [Smile]

How do you do your film transfers? For myself I use an Elmo GS1200 and literally film the wall..not very professional but it works. Unfortunately there is a small hot spot near the center of the film and there is just the slight amount of flicker which can only be seen during brightly lit scenes. How are you dealing with the flicker? Just curious!

I've said this before and I'll say it again, Alan really knows how to sell on Ebay. Every time I look into one of his auctions he has the projector beautifully displayed and presented, along with full specifications and descriptions etc. I think this is great, as cine equipment has a special beauty of its own and it's nice to see Alan showing these great pieces of equipment in such an outstanding way. I have never purchasaed anything from Alan, but I always visit his auctions just to enjoy his presentations.

How did you find the best kept secret in the s8 world then?

I quite like the prints that have gone red-sort of wonder what the colours would have been (lol).

To answer your question Rik, I get no flicker and no hot spots because every frame is captured individually through diffused light projected directly into the video camera. Then the 16, 18 or 24 fps is converted to 29.97 for video by interpolating extra frames. Since the video and audio are captured separately, it's a little involved to get the proper lip-sync in the final video. But, since I mostly get silent home movies, or sound movies with narration and/or background music, the process is much easier. We can chat more about this when I pick up the projector. To avoid legal hassles, I do not do copyrighted material.
