I was down there one time and we went out for dinner, a bunch of guys from Engineering in New York and A bunch of guys from the Factory in Reynosa.
I learned something that night: that the little sign I make to the waiter up here to bring the check means "Bring another Round" down there. So the Corona was available in BULK.
Now we weren't too toasted to navigate a rent-a-car back across the bridge but the problem was that there was a lot of traffic at the border that night, and gradually certain.... internal hydraulic pressures began to approach and then exceed rated maximums....
So we sat in that car and waited..and waited. Whatever anaesthetic value the Coronas had quickly wore off and we were left to slowly ponder the truism "You don't buy beer, you only rent it." We considered making use of the Rio Grande, but didn't think the possibility of a visit to the Reynosa Jail was worth it. They can hold you without charge and these things have been known to take time to sort out down there!
Finally our turn at Immigration/Customs came and I practically skidded the car into the booth. The border guard said "You're supposed to stop at the sign before you pull in.", but brilliant legal mind I am I countered with "We REALLY need to pee!"
This being about 7 months pre-911, that kind of logic still worked.
Fortunately there was a Wattaburger across the road from Customs. I doubt I've done a worse job of parking a car before or since!
