I had/still have a Linemar Electric Projector - Modell J-2640 shown on that side here http://optical-toys.com/index.php/de/detailansicht/EPI-LINE-001-1.html. An episcope (reflective object, not transparent) projector. It too a mains lamp and when it got hot the inside of the lens steamed up, from that description because I used too powerful a lamp. If I can find it I'll have to try it with a mains LED and see how it does.
And it would seem I had a 16mm (battery powered, still) projector in the 1950's I know my cousin had one and we often had the same toys or shared.
