Have you ever placed a film on a wants list then suddenly have the realization you already have it ?

I have and almost did it again.

A collector friend of mine has a decent sized collection, so keeps his prints organized by title for easy access.

He told me here and there he goes to put a new print away and finds the same one already there!

My collection isn't so big I've ever had this happen, but now and then I look through the shelves and do:

"When did I buy this?!!!"

(I like this: it's a little like getting a free film!)

Sure, a few times I've bought things I already have. Am unorganized and scatter brain, so no surprise.

Melvin it was for a 16mm print of the short NIGHT MAIL.
I forgot I already had it.

My collection is not huge but its big enough at the moment.

I really need to start cataloguing what I have sometime.

Steve ... I have done what your friend does. I have couple of copies of some prints of some films through sheer absent mindedness on my part.

Daniel ... I too am a bit of a scatterbrain at times. [Wink]

What's even worse is when you have a favorite film and start buying backup copies (-"just in case...")

I found myself with three backups and the film came up again...

I begged another Forum member to just BUY the thing before I did!

Steve things do have a tendency to get out of control when you worry to much about having "just in case" backups for both film and projectors.

However I can fully understand the reasons why.

Tom ... Sorry I don't have any of those titles you are looking for but if I see them I will email you. [Wink]

Cheers David,
On backup copies, sorry i dont get this, ive been collecting for 39 years, never felt the need for a back up copy. What we have done in the past is bought an improved copy of film we have, then i sell on the lesser of the two. One of each is mote than enough for me, apart from that, in this day of "hard to get" i think its keeping other collectors from obtaining films. Lets be honest, has anyone with two copies really needed them? Has your projector been that badly looked after thats its mangles or damaged your film? Maybe we are just lucky [Wink]

I'd mostly like backup copies of films I really like if I rarely see them for sale.

-In the case I'm talking about here it's a fairly common print that came up a couple of times cheap, so I thought "why not?".

(The answer to "why not" is called "storage space".)

I've never really had a machine mangle a film.

The only times I have ever had a projector mangle a print is usually at the leader part where either an auto threader malfunctioned or the leader was damaged or creased and I had failed to notice it.

I usually check all my prints on the film rewind bench before every showing.

If I didn't well that's my own fault if a print gets more damaged as a result of my stupid negligence.

Mind you there is nothing can be done if a print has became brittle with age. It can or will fall apart during projection regardless of how well it has been cared for and lubed and cleaned over the years.

So that might be a good reason to have backup copies of your favourite film titles for some collectors. [Smile]
