Larry, that would normally be the amount we buy, our purchases were made with sales of other items with the exception of a few 16mm films, we will be selling a few bits and pieces from January so we can hopefully go to Blackpool next year.
I try to make the hobby 80%ish self funding.
I agree with you 100% that prices are now becoming a bit ridiculous, seeing titles coming up,(even on the forums) for 600 is just loonacy in my opinion, BUT, unfortunately as time goes on this may become the norm.
It is one of the reasons i am looking toward 16mm, much more bang for your your dosh and many more titles.
i still think in some time that this pricing bubble will burst.
Once the projectors themselves begin to get scarce then who will want to pay the kind of sums for films with nothing to show them on?

Not only the projectors.
We will need service engineers to keep the ones we've got still running.
With the current retirement of Bill Parsons, even the engineers are getting thin on the ground.

Your absolutely right Maurice,
in fact this will speed up the demise of the projectors with the exception of those collectors who can carry out there own repairs, while i can do the very basics i a would never be able to attempt a fraction of what Bill has done for us in the past.

I thought I noticed a bit of a slide on Films price wise this year.

Certainly on Machines overall.

Are we down to one sort of official super 8 fixer in the UK now ?

Some lovely stuff there Tom.

Its funny how film gets that obsessional thing over us, but a very nice thing.

Best Mark.

Thought the 16mm prices for b films seemed a bit cheaper (and there's plenty on the dealers lists) but for A titles it seems the skies the limit. The problem is that as films become scarce the better off collectors will get what they want at any price. Now why wasn't my dad a millionaire????

I absolutely disagree that 'the bubble will burst'. On the contrary, as rarity increases, which is a certainty, so will prices. There are still a good many projectors out there so spares can be got from cannibalisation at the last resort. True that repair engineers are thin on the ground at the moment, but demand usually procures a supply. Projector repair is not rocket science it just requires a skill and dedication that most of us lack.
Film is another matter. a lot of the damage is irrepairable so that makes good stock even more rare and desirable.
Hang on to your hats, look after your precious collections and reap the whirlwind. (just my opinion of course)

Think positive Tom. You derive great pleasure from your hobby and it is in my opinion that in the future the content will only increase in value if you look after and treasure your collection. Look to any retro technology and you will see that interest only goes one way - UP!

My archive just started this year with collecting small gauge films. Prior to this is was all still photography.

My archive acquired about 75 older BW stag 8mm, about 60 BW stag 16mm, about 20 historical non-stag 16mm and some early Kodachrome home movies from the late 30's / early 40's.

Here is an interesting film I had done...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy5bTWqSd3k

I'm always looking to buy interesting historical 16mm films. No trailers, no movies. I prefer 400 to 800 feet single reels.

Scanning is $$$ so am looing to get into 2k scans myself for 2018. This has been a learning year, as I had no film experience.

...I have to admit 2017 was indeed a very busy year for me having re-entering the hobby after a 40 year absence. What I have learned has been amazing, thanks to the most part by this very forum and to all the members who were ready to reply to my now obvious rookie questions. For that, Thanks!
There was one particular endeavor of mine that I truly believe could not have been achieved save for this Forum's members: Acquiring all 3X600' reels/spools of The Fog , in scope. It Started with an eBay purchase of part 3, and the search for the other 2 parts went on for months. I finally completed the feature. Not possible, I think, Had I not joined This Forum, and was fortunate to be accepted.
So Thanks to the Forum, and to you two members in particular for making it happen. Happy Holidays to all!

Terry, your right i agree 100%. I think sometimes because we have been collecting here for 40 years and we often take for granted how few people own a collection of cine films and equipment. It is almost a full time job looking after it all and keeping an eye on everything to ensure it is all up to date with any cleaning.
While it isnt gold or diamonds a lot of time money and effort has been put into it over the years so taking stock as you say is very much spot on. [Wink]
Burton, well done for obtaining the fog scope feature, it is a very good movie on the big screen. [Wink]

...Tom, I must say it's worth every penny, But would not recommend trying to buy a feature a reel/spool at a time...$$$ add up. I also wanted to add a thanks to the handlers, who offer here or post links to updated lists. We are fortunate as collectors to have equally dedicated sellers. Their service has been a source of many gems and it has been a pleasure doing business with all. Here's to continued relations in 2018!

I decided to refrain from the forum and, indeed, Ebay for the last three days or so, and concentrate on the festivities.

Returning now, as I am doing, I read this wonderful topic.

Since I started collecting films in 1972-ish (starting with 50' black and white silents, progressing to features.....with sound!) I can honestly say that 2017 has been my BEST EVER YEAR BAR NONE for film purchases. Some of these I could only dare to dream would ever adorn my collection. But in the last 365 ish days.....THEY HAVE DONE!

Poltergeist (flat)
Gremlins
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Wizard of Oz
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Lethal Weapon
Carquake
Reach For The Sky
Ben Hur
City Heat
The African Queen
Police Academy 2
A Night To Remember
The Lady Vanishes
The 39 Steps
War Of The Worlds

.... amongst others. So, as you can see, it has not been an "okay" year....It has been BRILLIANT !

Here's to 2018 !

Thanks Tom.

Of course, there is another title I should have added to the list..... a certain 200' scope/stereo song and dance routine from "Carousel" which departed your collection last July as I seem to remember!!!?

Get on Melvin, i forgot that you bought that one, I'm pleased its gone to a good home,
My other two turned up from Steve at the Reel Image today,
Three on Couch, good old Jerry Lewis 400 footer,
A very rare trailer on 8mm Pulp Fiction, A1 quality to and it appears to be on brown pre stripe stock so the sound its stonking.
Only problem was for some reason i got hit with £14.00 import bill, (VAT and a rip off fee from Royal mail) so this will probably put paid to me buying from the States again unless it is really something special, i was well peed off with this as the two films were only $40 so now this import crap makes it expensive. First time thats ever happened to me but these two titles now conclude my list for 2017 [Wink]
Right then, whats going to be my first buy of 2018 [Big Grin] [Wink]

2017 has also been the best year for me, with 11 16mm features purchased between March and November. I couldn't afford to buy that amount during the Golden Age of Super 8 in the 70s and early 80s. There seems to have been better titles on offer this year. My increase has probably been due to spending more time looking on Ebay, and buying through the Global Shipping Programme. Most were listed at BIN prices, which with customs and postage, often worked out no dearer than what you would expect to pay from a UK dealer.
Among the titles I picked up were,
Zulu
Wife of Monte Cristo
Sword of Monte Cristo
The Four Feathers (Very nice copy from Mr Guest)
The gem of my collection, now has to be, simply for it's rarity, 'My Wife's Family', a comedy with Ted Ray and Ronald Shiner.
I had actually had to stop adding due to the extreme shortage of space, but then had to come back when David listed 'Jason and the Argonauts'; this has been my most desired film since Derann issued a Super 8 feature, which must be over 30 years ago.
Strangely, after waiting all these years; within two weeks of receiving it, I found a local shop selling imported wine from Georgia, in clay bottles. One of them showed Jason and the Argonauts. I learned from my wife that Colchis, where the golden fleece was is in present day Georgia. Needless to say I have added this bottle to my collection.
I also purchased a print of 'Siege of the Saxons', which was the supporting feature to Jason in 1963.

As a relative newcomer to 16mm collecting, this year has seen me add:
Murder on the Orient Express (Agfa);
Death on the Nile (Agfa)
The Eye of the Needle (Fuji)
Oliver! (scope IB tech)
Green for Danger (beautiful splice free print).
Zulu - if only!

As a beginner, you have some great titles there Neil. You did well to get Oliver in scope and IB Tech, I think that's quite a rarity.
We just bought one of those 4K televisions, and last week I watched the DVD of Zulu, and although it's amazingly sharp, I didn't enjoy it as much as projecting the film.
