...Tom, I must say it's worth every penny, But would not recommend trying to buy a feature a reel/spool at a time...$$$ add up. I also wanted to add a thanks to the handlers, who offer here or post links to updated lists. We are fortunate as collectors to have equally dedicated sellers. Their service has been a source of many gems and it has been a pleasure doing business with all. Here's to continued relations in 2018!

I decided to refrain from the forum and, indeed, Ebay for the last three days or so, and concentrate on the festivities.

Returning now, as I am doing, I read this wonderful topic.

Since I started collecting films in 1972-ish (starting with 50' black and white silents, progressing to features.....with sound!) I can honestly say that 2017 has been my BEST EVER YEAR BAR NONE for film purchases. Some of these I could only dare to dream would ever adorn my collection. But in the last 365 ish days.....THEY HAVE DONE!

Poltergeist (flat)
Gremlins
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Wizard of Oz
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Lethal Weapon
Carquake
Reach For The Sky
Ben Hur
City Heat
The African Queen
Police Academy 2
A Night To Remember
The Lady Vanishes
The 39 Steps
War Of The Worlds

.... amongst others. So, as you can see, it has not been an "okay" year....It has been BRILLIANT !

Here's to 2018 !

Thanks Tom.

Of course, there is another title I should have added to the list..... a certain 200' scope/stereo song and dance routine from "Carousel" which departed your collection last July as I seem to remember!!!?

Get on Melvin, i forgot that you bought that one, I'm pleased its gone to a good home,
My other two turned up from Steve at the Reel Image today,
Three on Couch, good old Jerry Lewis 400 footer,
A very rare trailer on 8mm Pulp Fiction, A1 quality to and it appears to be on brown pre stripe stock so the sound its stonking.
Only problem was for some reason i got hit with £14.00 import bill, (VAT and a rip off fee from Royal mail) so this will probably put paid to me buying from the States again unless it is really something special, i was well peed off with this as the two films were only $40 so now this import crap makes it expensive. First time thats ever happened to me but these two titles now conclude my list for 2017 [Wink]
Right then, whats going to be my first buy of 2018 [Big Grin] [Wink]

2017 has also been the best year for me, with 11 16mm features purchased between March and November. I couldn't afford to buy that amount during the Golden Age of Super 8 in the 70s and early 80s. There seems to have been better titles on offer this year. My increase has probably been due to spending more time looking on Ebay, and buying through the Global Shipping Programme. Most were listed at BIN prices, which with customs and postage, often worked out no dearer than what you would expect to pay from a UK dealer.
Among the titles I picked up were,
Zulu
Wife of Monte Cristo
Sword of Monte Cristo
The Four Feathers (Very nice copy from Mr Guest)
The gem of my collection, now has to be, simply for it's rarity, 'My Wife's Family', a comedy with Ted Ray and Ronald Shiner.
I had actually had to stop adding due to the extreme shortage of space, but then had to come back when David listed 'Jason and the Argonauts'; this has been my most desired film since Derann issued a Super 8 feature, which must be over 30 years ago.
Strangely, after waiting all these years; within two weeks of receiving it, I found a local shop selling imported wine from Georgia, in clay bottles. One of them showed Jason and the Argonauts. I learned from my wife that Colchis, where the golden fleece was is in present day Georgia. Needless to say I have added this bottle to my collection.
I also purchased a print of 'Siege of the Saxons', which was the supporting feature to Jason in 1963.

As a relative newcomer to 16mm collecting, this year has seen me add:
Murder on the Orient Express (Agfa);
Death on the Nile (Agfa)
The Eye of the Needle (Fuji)
Oliver! (scope IB tech)
Green for Danger (beautiful splice free print).
Zulu - if only!

As a beginner, you have some great titles there Neil. You did well to get Oliver in scope and IB Tech, I think that's quite a rarity.
We just bought one of those 4K televisions, and last week I watched the DVD of Zulu, and although it's amazingly sharp, I didn't enjoy it as much as projecting the film.

Thank you Robert, I'm in my second year and am up to 18 features - still a novice. Oliver! is great, although the only problem is that someone has cut the first musical number straight after the titles, so I'm missing about three minutes. Otherwise the film is complete, it looks - and sounds - great. I had forgotten some others added during the year:
The Best things in Life are Free - scope
The Riddle of the Sands - Fuji scope.
These two were bargains from David Guest, the latter is in its Filmbank/Rank hire box.
Paint Your Wagon (IB Tech) scope.
I can see space is going to become an issue in 2018..

You have done well to get such high profile titles with good colour in such a short time.

Another couple of titles I bought were:
Kelly and Me, a very nice print from David Guest, starring van Johnson; a very nice film for dog lovers.
Son of Robin Hood in Scope.

Thanks Tom. Must say that your print of Witness looks a stunner. I remember going to see that when it came out. It's one of those films with repeatability.

Well this year I finally found an English soundtrack print of "The Sting" part 2 of the 2x400ft release. I also gained on Super 8
I married a Woman 4x400ft B&W scope
Hounds Of Zarrof 4x400ft
The Island part 2 of 2x400ft
Singin' in the Rain 2x400ft
That'll be the Day part 1 of 4x400ft (to go with my 400ft extract that doesn't include any of this)
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry 400ft
The Great Escape extract 2 scope
Scope travelogues, Honeymoon Paradise & Stairways to the Andes
A reel of 7 James Bond trailers
The musical shorts "Bob Crosby & his Orchestra" 1938 & "Sounda of a City" 1960's pop Look at Life

And on 16mm the feature The Truth About Spring (John & Hayley Mills)

Yes, a very good year for me too.

Hi Brian, I wonder if your Bob Crosby film is different from mine; mine was released by Wing Films and distributed by DCR of the Isle of Wight; the release year was given as 1931. I think it included 'South Rampart Street Parade'.

It must be a different Bob Cosby film. Mine is a Dilm Archive Productions (Vintage Film series no 301 1938) distributed by BMM Film Services, Buckingham.

I bought it from Ian of Perrys Films at the revived Big Screen Scene in October.

Now looking out to make a January purchase, 8 or 16mm [Wink]

Happy New year to all.

With moving house in late 2017 and putting together a new screening room, I only bought one super 8 film in 2018, but what a gem it is.

Ian O'Reilly advertised it here, "Bulldog Jack", a 30's crime caper with Fay Fray. 3 x 400ft and at a very decent price, I took a punt, not knowing anything about it.

After a bit of google, it is a Bulldog Jack off-shoot, edited from the feature, although just where and how you couldn't guess.

It is intentionally hilarious, the sort of film that has been overlooked, but hugely entertaining. I looked to see if a digital version exists, but apparently only a Spanish version with average picture and very poor sound, so another reason to have the very watchable super 8 version.

It was shown several times over Christmas with lots of laughs, and a bargain from the ever reliable Ian.

Just brilliant - long live real film!

[Smile]

PS. It came on one full 1200ft spool with "J. Bird" written in black marker around the edge, so I wonder if this once belonged to the great John Bird of super 8 heritage here in the UK?
