As My projector reaches the last 75' of film on a given reel the sound gets more garbled as if someone were gargling or listening to it under water. It's not as noticeable in the 1st half of a reel, but always worse towards the last few minutes. The unit is clean and stored in a good climate. Any suggestions?

Without knowing the projector (which makes the reply almost bullet proof) this sounds like a take up tension problem working it's way back through the second sprocket and disturbing the sound past the sound head.

Try creating some slack in the take up when this happens by putting a light finger pressure on the take up reel and letting a loop develop between the projector and the take up reel (the wind will be a bit slack but this is only a test). If the sound clears up then you know that there is a problem in the take up clutch or the setting of the take up motor.

If that doesn't help then you need to examine the film and the guides around the sound head to see if the film is squed and wandering from the guides.

The unit is a Chinon Sound 7000.

Did you try the test and check the areas I outlined?
