Thought GS1200 owners might find this useful; A motor on the GS1200 can often slow right down, getting too hot to touch. No amount of cleaning/lubricating can sort it. Usually this means it's had it! Fortunately, I've found a small company based in Derbyshire, which specialises in rewinding small motors, just like the GS1200 main motor. They charge about £100 for the job, but so far the motor (in a friend's machine) has worked perfectly, and I had it done in March this year. You will notice the motor is slightly noisier after the job ( a kind of slight whine ) but I have noticed that over time this begins to wear off. It could be that it's bedding itself in, or the new brushes they put in. With the sound on though, it's not a problem. The company, F W & P G Mason Rewinds, can be contacted on 01629 650738. Mention my name and tell them I've had a motor done with them, if they ask where you got their details. This could well be another saving grace for our valued GS1200s and any other machine needing a new motor.

Nice one Simon. I know the whine you are talking of and yes it usually happens after changeing the brushes. Its normally not due to burnt out windings that kill these motors but down to all the debris from the carbon brushes that fill the gaps on the armature. When I have had this slow down with overheating I simply strip down the motor and clean the gaps with a fine pin, polish up the brass armature and then put in new brushes. This has normally returned the motor back to health.
Can I ask why they did a rewind? had it burnt out windings?
What would be usefull is if they could supply the carbon brushes for the Mk2 motors which have the brushes enclosed in side the motor and not replaceable from the outside like the Mk1 motor.

Great news Simon- Thanks for the posting.

Kev, was there any advantage of the Mk2 motor over the Mk1?

Simon, well done matey. Perhaps we should look at some how putting together a data base of all the potential repairs and replacement parts people that we are hearing about on the forum.

There seems to be the skills and know how amongst the forum members to get most things done to our old projectors and, like simons contact, a number of potential suppliers of parts and specialist services.

Any ideas how we might do that?

Before rewinding, the whole of the motor's internals would illuminate blue through excessive arcing. The motor rewind company told me the whole thing needed rewinding as something or other had burned out. Also, across each section of the comutator, they said, was a small resistor. This was to reduce arcing, but as they saw this as a future fault liability, these were removed. The motor has behave perfectly since, so I'm not complaining. As long as it quietens down a bit...will it?

Should do Simon. Resistors? I have never seen these in an Elmo main motor and I have had plenty to pieces for a clean up. 2 anti arc capacitors accross the input yes.
You sure they havent just changed the brushes and charged you well for doing it??? [Frown] All sounds a bit suss to me.
