Maybe this has been mentioned before I do not remember. Who decides when the super 8 copies are mono or stereo sound when the original master material provides the choice?

Is it royalty costs? Music studios? Collectors who don't have dual track machines vs mono compatible (putting all 5 base channels on one track)? I mean, most prints have the balance stripe on the print anyway, right?

I am referring of course to recent releases because super 8 stereo is getting popular. Stereo sound on film goes way back to the days of epics like Ben Hur, yet so many releases have been single track. Why?

It just bugs me to hear a movie in mono and see the Dolby logo in the credits!

Only Derann have the hardware to record release prints in stereo. If the stereo tracks are available they tend to do them in stereo nowadays. Obviously due to the nature of sound stripe this can be a problematic and thankless task. But they've had some outstanding results lately.

Chip, Get a GS or Bauer machine and have a go at doing some tracks in stereo yourself. The results can be very rewarding. [Smile]
