My copy of Ben-Hur has kind of a watery sound. I've heard this on some of my casettes tapes, this kind of watery sound. But I just threw them out. Does anyone know iof I can just re-record the soundtrack? Or is the watery sound part of the decay of the magnetic strip? If it just needs to be re-recorded I may send it over to Reel Image and have it re-mixed in stereo too. So if anyone has some feedback on this watery issue let me know.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by watery sound? (Is the film itself in good condition, i.e. not shrunk, warped or afflicted with VS?)
As for re-recording, why not try recording something yourself, either on the leader or tail end of the film, and see how it comes out when playing back?

There is no evidence to show that the magnetic material itself deteriorates. Thats not to say that the recording doesent. If the film has been stored anywhere near a stray magnetic field then its possible for the recording quality to become muffled as it will be the high frequencies which are affected (or is it effected)first.
You should be able to record on the film again with no problems.
It would as asked earlier to have a better discription of what this "watery" effect sounds like.

The reason I was asking whether the film itself was shrunk or warped at all is because I would imagine that such shrinking/warping kind of forces the magnetic stripe to curl up (in a small degree, anyway) thus it would no longer run smoothly past the sound head. That could well cause a watery kind of sound effect - but then again, the film would probably have to be SEVERELY warped for this to happen (and by then, of course, sound would be the least of your worries [Big Grin] ). It's a thought, anyway.

Oh, and... keep those Q-tips handy for cleaning the heads [Wink]
